All this ridiculous (albeit maybe well-founded) obsession with prestige has me worried. My main schools right now are UF and Colgate. I can't pay for Colgate. Both my family and myself would go into serious debt. UF is more than free and I'd get some other perks (Infiniti G35 anyone?). I've pretty much decided to go there, because my parents said they'd pay for my grad school if I did that. As much as kids on here are obsessed with undergrad, I know that 20 years down the line, my grad school will be much more important than undergrad.

So here's my plan... tell me if this is plausible...

Go to UF, Major in Finance or Economics.

Move to Chicago and work for one of the many firms up there.
(Why Chicago? I love the city, and they have a nice little financial district... while I really don't like NYC at all.)

Work there and other places (if need be) for 4-5 years.

Then go on to grad school (Hopefully with a business footing the bill, but my parents if no one else is willing). I'd really like to go to Kellogg or a similar tier school. Is that possible if I "only" go to UF for undergrad?

Thanks a lot,

-Ted

are they giving out free Infiniti G35s to incoming freshmen at UF?

Something like that. If I sign up soon I get a corporate jet to make the 100 mile commute.

Haha, no, the G35 is just a mix of my savings and a bribe from my parents... but a very good one at that.

In the real world it doesn't matter. On an online forum full of pretentious *******s it means everything.

Maintain a 3.6+ GPA and enjoy college. It's most definitely possible.

Thank you. I was hoping to hear something like that. Off to Gainesville!

How hard is it to land an analyst job in a city like Chicago? Will they recruit or will I have to go up there and just start asking around?

Even national firms recruit regionally (for their specific offices). Use the Gators network to find internship there and then use that opportunity as a stepping stone.

BTW, Chicago GSB also runs a massive part-time MBA program in downtown.

Colgate is not enough of a "better" school than UF to be worth much effort at all. UF is clearly - clearly - the better of the two choices given your situation.

my cousin, from miami, was recruited for football to colgate, blew out his knee, transferred to uf after his sophomore year and loved it.

the football is a complicating factor, but hope this helps.
