<p>You can do that. Its usually hard to do that in your freshmen year, specially at Stony Brook were housing was a big issue until recently but I heard of some students being able to do it. I don’t know if its such a good idea to pair up with old friends in College in your freshmen year. Check the campus out, experience new people and then if you still want to room together then select a common room with your friend sophomore year.</p>

<p>I am going to try my best at answering your question even though I am not sure what you actually mean by dorms (dorm rooms, dorm buildings?). Stony Brook Places freshmen students in different quadrangles (Quads) according to the residential undergraduate college (LDS- HQuad, ITS- Mendhlson, etc) you choose before attending, I chose the Information Technology Studies (ITS) my first year and I was placed in Mendelhson Quad my first year in which has four buildings, I was in Grey. Basically, every residential building has freshmen students because their is no ‘designated’ freshmen buildings in campus. So there is hundreds of rooms for freshmen students, more than enough now considering that they recently completed the new residential complex.</p>
