Can I double major in humanities and engineering at Rice?

Going by the CommonApp it seems that way, but I just want to make sure. I'm interested in double-majoring in English and Computer Science and taking a wide array of classes (sciences, humanities, social sciences, etc.). But, it seems that if I want to do Computer Science I would be limited to courses at the College of Engineering and English I would be limited to College of Humanities.

If this is the case, I definitely wouldn't be applying. But just to make sure, is this true? If not, please explain how it works, because I'm pretty confused.

Thanks!

I think you may have Rice confused with another school you are looking at.

There are no limitations on which schools you can take classes in and/or major in (to the best of my knowledge).

I would recommend though that you come in with a lot of AP credit though if you want to pursue both of these and graduate in 4 years.

Rice is pretty open in the sense that you can take any class you want as long as you satisfy prerequisites. Also, don’t think you have to “double major.” It’s honestly not that big of a deal. I would personally rather spend my time taking a variety of classes in different disciplines than have to be on another prescribed track.

My sister is a sophomore Chemical engineering major at Rice, and she said that with engineering it’s incredibly difficult to double major. This is mainly because of all the requirements for engineering majors, which makes it hard to make time to take a bunch of other courses in another discipline.

^ I think that there is some validity to that, although the AP credits can certainly make it an easier venture. My S who is an engineering major thinks he will be able to triple major, just possibly by “accident” (for example… taking 5 courses anyway for a major that requires 6 courses). I’m not encouraging him to pursue that however :-).

Computer science requires 82 credits out of 128 required to graduate, essentially taking up about 2-3 years of school.
