I’m a senior in high school right now and I am taking all AP classes except for French (not offered). I am doing quite well with straight As at the moment, but the workload of my AP Eng Lit class is absolutely ridiculous. It takes up at least half of my daily homework time. How bad would it look if I switched into normal English next semester? I really hate this class.
I don’t think it’d look great. It would look like you couldn’t handle the courseload and might make colleges shy away from selecting you? Not completely sure these are just guesses
In another thread, you are only applying to UCs. Do UCs cap the value of honors courses and AP courses for your UC GPA? If so, and you already have a ton of APs, , drop to honors English.
You would have to let every college you applied to know you have changed your schedule and have dropped AP Literature. And if you have been accepted to any college you would have to inform the school of your schedule change and the school would have the right to change your admissions decision. So dropping it next semester won’t allow you to “hide” from colleges the fact that you have switched to an easier class. IMO if you are going to drop AP Literature you might as well do so now, save yourself the work that the class entails, and just don’t list the AP Lit class on your college applications.
If applying for UCs, you would enter your planned second semester class as the non AP English class. This would drop your rigor a bit.
You would only need to report a change that is not reflected in your application.
That being said my S last year also considered going into regular English after first semester. I was supportive of what ever he decided. In the end, he stuck with IB English and got a low B.
If you are going to be applying to be a STEM major, then personally I would drop it (or cut back to honors). Of course you will need to inform universities in your applications that you will do this.
I will admit that I am very much an advocate of “do what makes sense for you, then find a university that is fine with what you did”. However, this approach has worked for me and for my family.
I know this is a very late response but thank you all for the advice, I think I’ll just suck it up and keep my AP Lit class. Thanks guys
You will be fine if you drop it. I dropped APUSH a couple weeks ago and the grade didn’t even transfer over. try to get out ASAP though. im Taking ap Lang right now and I’m definitelytaking regular next year because I’ve heard bad things, and most colleges only give you credit for one of the ap English’s.
