Can I get a job as a materials engineer with a degree in solid-state physics?

Hello all,
I think working as a materials engineer would be an awesome job, but the school I'm going to only offers MatSci/MatEng as a Master's or PhD. But, they do offer a degree in physics with a concentration in solid state physics, which a lot of people have told me is similar to materials engineering. Is that true?
Also, I've heard there is a shortage of materials engineers and it is fairly easy to find a job in the field. Is that true?
I'd appreciate any answers I can get.

Yes that is possible. I know of at least one physics major who has done this and is now in a PhD program in Materials Engineering. I am not sure about shortage of materials engineering but it is one of the larger fields of engineering.
