Can I get a masters in computer science?

Hi,

If I graduate from a UC with a Bachelors in Economics, can I go for my masters in computer science after or does that require me to have a bachelors in engineering/computers?

U can get a masters in any field as long as you have taken the minimum courses required for admissions. You can be admitted as long as you take the the courses prior to starting the masters coursework.

I would contact an admissions counselor for the degree you are seeking and ask what classes you should take or how far behind you are in coursework. You could just take some of the classes at a community college if you wish. Hopefully with your economics background you have some of the math out the way.

I would say you would need Cal I, Calc II, Linear algebra and discrete math at a minimum for math courses. For computer classes you would at least need a object oriented language, data structures, and a computer architecture course at the minimum.

Each school has their own requirements though so it would depend on what school you go to.

It would be hard at many UCs because they turn away many applicants for a MS that have all the qualifications. At CSU schools there is a status where they admit you as a Masters student but you are not officially accepted into the major until you’ve taken all the prerequisites they require; you then take those undergrad courses at the CSU. And as an option, you could start at the CSU that way, take the needed classes, but apply to a UC school before you officially enter the MS program in CS.
