I've already asked two teachers for my recommendations (I'm a rising senior, by the way). One is my AP Computer Science teacher, the other is my English teacher from junior year. However, I've been reading the Common App and I noticed that they very specifically mention that teacher recs must be from those who taught an "academic subject". Would CS be considered an academic subject?

If it helps: I am planning on applying as a CS major, and at my school CS is considered under the math department. I've always thought it was sufficiently 'serious' and 'academic' enough, although it isn't a core subject, and I was hoping that having a rec from a CS teacher would help establish that I'm reasonably competent and can do well in my intended major.

So could this be considered an academic subject? Can I count this as one of my two required recs?

Yes, APCS is an academic subject. The teachers that won’t qualify are those who teach Gym, Health, Child Development, etc.

While it is a good idea to get a rec from your CS teacher (since you plan to major in CS), you should make sure that the teacher can write well. In this sense, being concise and straightforward is better than using roundabout language. Make sure your APCS teacher can at least construct some meaningful sentences without grammatical errors. My school’s Calc BC teacher is notorious for awful punctuation, which doesn’t reflect well in applications.

It’s OK to have a recommendation from your APCS teacher. Especially since you intend on majoring in Comp Sci

Thank you both! I’m not too worried about the writing of the recommendation…I’ve asked this teacher for a job rec before, and it was a very straightforward, clear letter.
