i was thinking of going to school for petroleum engineering but i want to have more options just in case. what would be the right way to go about it? should i attend a school like Texas A&M and study mechanical or aerospace. then possibly get an internship with an oil company.
can i get hired as a petroleum engineer with a different engineering degree? ex:aerospace, mechanical
Wouldn’t chemical be a closer fit than aerospace? (Not positive, that’s why I’m asking.)
My DD has a great internship this summer for a large oil company and she is an ME major. She said the other 200 interns at her location are an assortment of majors. Get the best gpa you can and be active in an on-campus club or organization with some relationship to the energy industry and it will help you land an internship in that field.
I’ve known aerospace engineers that go into the petrochemical industry. It’s not the most direct route but it’s doable.
My husband’s degree is chemical engineering, he has worked in the petroleum industry since graduation. Most of the engineers he works with are not petroleum engineers…depends on if you want to work in upstream or downstream, exploration or refining etc.
