rickpaul80: If you have a 4.0 UW GPA and a 2230 SAT (from soph year!), it doesn't matter if you live in Berkeley, Kansas, or on Mars. Since you're only a junior, I'm assuming you'll take the SAT again. It can't hurt you, and if you study you'd end up w/ a 2300+ score. As far as the other schools on your list:

MIT: Reach (good shot, but it's a reach for everyone...)
Northwestern: Match
Georgia Tech: Safe Match
Cornell: Match
Carnegie Mellon: Match
Kansas: Safety
JHU BME: Match
USC: Safe Match

You have a lot of matches. Since you're a junior, go out and research HYPS and find a couple to apply to.

Get some more leadership in your ECs, and good essays and I'd say you have a chance (like everyone) at MIT. The rest you're good for. JHU might be a slight reach.

Stop fretting. Your stats are good. You will certainly get into more than one of the schools on your list. As for approximate percentages, well, nobody can really give you those. MIT, for example, is a ***** to get into. All the kids that apply have stats like yours and less than 15% are accepted. Same is true for HYP etc. Your best bet is to visit the websites of the schools you're interested in, dig around for their admissions data such as percentage admitted, percentage admitted early decision, percentage admitted with 750 - 800 Math SATs - most schools list this stuff - and calculate your own estimates about getting in by comparing your stats to the stats listed. And when you create your final list of colleges to apply to, have some stretches (MIT and the Ivies, by the way, are stretches for almost everybody), some matches, and some safeties...And make sure all the schools you apply to have the program you want. Prestige is all well and good, but what you should really be looking for is a school that matches you.

I don't understand why you think your location will hurt you. Yes, you're Out of State, but Kansas? How many people from Kansas go to the schools you applied to? Not as many...So your location actually makes you a MORE diverse and interesting person...Good luck!

while the op's title is rather self complimenting, i have to say that it is important to answer these threads for juniors. It is important for juniors so that we can learn how we can improve (im a junior) they are useless for seniors who cant change anything and want to see chances at a school. it is useful for seniors when they want to see where they should appy, however. so yeah chances threads are important.
