I am wondering about my chances for admission to UVA ED.

UW GPA: 3.81
GPA: 4.04
SAT: (first try)
CR: 730
W: 620
M: 660

I am a white male from southwestern Virginia with no legacy to UVA. At my school, grades from credit bearing courses from 8th grade were included in GPA calculation of which 3 B's were included. I have taken the most difficult schedule offered to me and attend a Governor's School for math and science courses even though they are my least favorite subjects. Each math and science course there is weighted and it has an excellent record for placing students at UVA and other even more elite schools.

One concern that I did have was that my grade in precalculus dropped from an A in the 1st semester to a C in the 2nd semester for a B for the year. That and Biology this year are the only two B's that I have recieved for the year in high school.

My extracurriculars are not spectacular, but I was class president sophomore and junior years, as well as Latin Club president, All District on the district champion quizbowl team, a mentorship at a law firm, and various other activities. I was honored as head marshall of the junior class for having the top GPA.

I would like to double major in economics and history in preparation for Law School.

Do I have a good chance at acceptance at UVA? What about William and Mary, W&L, and any other similar schools that I may have a chance at?

You have an impressive application, plus you're instate, so i would say your chances are good.

You've got a pretty good chance, and applying ED will certainly help. What's your rank? That matters a lot, too.

I'm officially ranked 1st in my class, although each person above 4.0 is deemed a valedictorian. I think i still have the highest or second highest GPA among the juniors at my high school.

u seem almosta shoe in. maybe u should aim higher during ed or ea. i am sure u wil get echols scholar if u apply during RD and if u claim to be atleast 1, or 2 in ur class.

Thanks to all of you for your replies!

How much will the C for the semester hurt me?

It won't. Congrats on being UVA '10 ;)

I would guess you most probably will get in (like 90% sure). However, your 1280 SAT is of some concern. Again, I think you will get in, but just to be certain, try raising that score.

1280, virginiaalum? That's 1390. Either way, 1280 would be fine. The average score for instate students is only about around 1290, and everyone within the top 30 at my school that applied got in (even those with "low" test scores.)

I'd say: NO ECHOLS
UVA is a fit........

a friend got in echols with 1350 or so, but hes number 2 in his class... seems likeechols is mostly about class rank.

Thanks again for all of the responses guys. I was just wondering about the grades from 8th that are really lowering my GPA.

Does anyone know how UVA recalculates GPA and whether or not they will even look at these?

I'd say given your class rank and being from southwestern Virginia, you have a realllllllllly good chance at getting in at both UVA and W&M, and are a shoo-in for the rest of the state schools. Being a high achieving student from less represented parts of the state will serve you well.

As far as GPA recalculation, they didn't do it for my high school but we were a bit of a special case in that we don't report unweighted GPAs or have a class rank. As for the middle school courses, I would expect them to give them even less credence than freshman year grades if they look at them at all. As long as your overall GPA isn't too low (which it isn't) I wouldn't worry about the middle school Bs.
