can i get in? i am freaking out

i am a junior.. ive recently done bad in some classes so i am freaking out about my college chances

my gpa is something like 4.7 uw and 3.8 w .. last semester it was 4.9

this semester if i am lucky, i will get 3-4 As and 5 Bs .. next semester i know i can get 7 As, its just that ive been busy

i take

Spanish 4 HL1/IB
AP US/COMPARATIVE GOV
AP BIOLOGY
AP US HISTORY
HONORS MATH ANALYSIS
IB PYSCHOLOGY
AP LITERATURE
ACADEMIC DECATHALON

i am in MUN and have many awards including 3 gavels
i won world affair's council academic world quest , 1st place, got a congressional recognition letter
i am in mock trial , got a attorney award
i have done 2 years JV SWIMMING, and im probably going to do Varsity tennis this spring
i have been on principal's honor roll all semesters of high school
i have school awards for ap euro last year
and all sorts of smaller stuff

i will, if all goes to schedule, get congressional silver medal for community service in september

i have taken 4 ap tests so far
geography , euro, english language, world, and got 5s in all of them

i am going to take 8 ap tests this year, (self studying macro and micro econ and ap psych, )
and expect to get 5s in all of them, maybe 4s since you never know ( i dont want to sound condescending but i can get A+ and or 5 in anything as long as i study or care and i have a perfect 5 score on all aps as it is)

so 13 APs with hopefully all 5s

im planning on taking the SAT in march, in practice tests ive gotten 1900 the first time, and am taking another one this next saturday and expect to get somewhere around 2100

i am shooting for a 2300-2400 SAT , and am studying hours a day for that
i think my SAT will ofshoot my weak gpa, is that true?

i will probably get amazing recomendation letters since my school's ib history teacher who also teaches euro and psych loves me since i set a historic curve on his giant euro final last year

i am trying to get a short story published in the new yorker, im editing it , i dont know if they will accept it , but ive been told by my teachers whom i showed the rough draft that it was very good, but again, im being realistic

i am the child of turkish immigrants and came here when i was 8 , i learned english on my own and my family struggled financially for years

soo.. i probably forgot some stuff.. but do i have a chance to get into UCLA and or UC BERKELEY.. ?

im honestly freaking out about getting into a good college, i used to dream of harvard, but my laziness put an end to that..

and my sister goes to berkeley

and i forgot...

i am the president of 5 club, the vice president of 2
(they are not "bull" clubs)

i am in the running for MUN secretary general, and though the election hasnt happened yet, my opponents are not very strong canidates nor are they very well liked, so i am told i will probably win, but that is not for sure

--

one more thing

i have 600 hours of community service, by application time, i should have 1300 hours

and this summer i am most likely going to taking physics 1A at uci and hopefully intern with my dad's geneticist friend who needs a lab rat to run around (me!) , and i so can add research to my resume

i also want you guys to understand what im going through, i am legitimately thinking that i am going to have to go to a community college or something .... ah!!! i dont even want to think about it

, so please respond to this, since i cant even sleep because im thinking that my future is ruined

definetley not… 5Bs is going to get u rejected…drop ur ECs and don’t be an EC wh-ore and focus on getting good grades.

Use the link below to see your UC admit rate chances on UC Statfinder by going to "Custom Tables:

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/)

i checked that table and i am thinking my gpa for 10-11 is going to be around 3.7/ 4.65

but maybe higher i dont know

so maybe 20-40 % … but its not just based on that… my friend had a gpa of 3.4 and got in since he is actually very very smart but has had drug problems etc/ though he got himself back on track last part of high school

jtanton- are you sure man? i know people on this forum are very cynical sometimes but i am honest to god having a panic attack

please… can people say something? i am appealing to the scared person inside you all, the person who sees the vast open steppe that is their future and doubts their ability to survive, we’ve all been there, we’ve all been through it, please help me get through it , help me, tell me the truth

ok fine…ive been in that scared person many times and in fact im in that phase right now as i await my grades at ucla this quarter…so ill help u

dude u need to find out how can u can do everything to get good grades…u need to study very hard…is your semester over yet? if it is, that sux…if it isn’t then drop ur ECs and get 3-4 hours of sleep each day studying…u should still talk to friends at school so u don’t get too deppressed…Bs are not good and to be quite honest UCLA doesn’t care how many APs u take…it cares whether you get As…so get As and do what u can to do it…also i doubt ur calculating ur UC GPA correctly…u need to google UC GPA calculator AND ONLY COUNT COURSES THAT COUNT TOWARDS THAT GPA.

if ur semester is over then u need to study over winter break to make sure next semester is FLAWLESS…don’t play a sport if that is what it takes…u play tennis so u’ll have a chance to play senior year, u wont have another chance to boost ur gpa…

U HAVE DONE ENOUGH ECs…ucla loves ECs a lot…i know it does…u have done waay more than enough…so it is okay to drop a couple of ECs rite now to foucs on GPA…for ur SAT i recommend u take practice tests, read THE ECONOMIST…and go to the college confident SAT forum and look for the best SAT vocab book…i know there is one that those folks rave about…i used it and it helped a lot

to come to think about it more i think u will get in…so that anwers ur question about chances

u should not worry about ur chances though rite now…worry about wut u need to do to get a high GPA because that is right now the only thing u need to improve ur app

and i think u should also learn ur lesson here…NEVER SACRIFICE GRADES AND GPA FOR EXTRACURRICULARS…u do that at college and u can kiss ur grad school chances goodbye

hope this helps…now go study, look at that SAT book i told u about…and then stop looking at the computer…and study with cellphone off, tv off, etc

good luck

All those extracurriculars and tough classes are meaningless if your grades are low.

The fact that your sister goes to Berkeley does not help you, nor do the recommendation letters since the UC system does not consider them. From what I’ve seen, UCLA and Cal give the greatest weight to your GPA (which will not end up being that competitive with all those Bs) and your ECs, while they play an important role as well, will not necessarily make up for your lacking GPA.

Of course, you still have a chance if you can explain your case well and really present yourself as a unique student that deserves to be picked out of all the applicants.

[i also want you guys to understand what im going through, i am legitimately thinking that i am going to have to go to a community college or something … ah!!! i dont even want to think about it

, so please respond to this, since i cant even sleep because im thinking that my future is ruined]

^That part is just ridiculous. There are MANY universities that would want to accept you, and if you’re THAT determined to get into Cal or LA, going to a CC first and then transferring is not a bad idea. You shouldn’t be losing sleep over something like this, and you shouldn’t be worrying as much as you are.

Like everyone before me said, you need to get good grades as well as good extracurriculars. Having just good extracurriculars means nothing. So drop a few of those ECs and focus on your grades!
