Can I get in next year? Class of 2018

I've been frightened about applications for next year even though I still have a month of my junior year left. I'm most worried about the UW GPA, since it is close to .15 lower than the middle 50% acceptance. With the standards increasing every year, I'm interested in knowing where my chances lie. Here are my stats.

White Caucasian Male from Georgia
3.6 UW recalculated GPA, 3.9 W recalculated GPA
9 Honors Classes Through Junior Year (Lit 9th and 10th, Biology 9th, Spanish 9th, 10th, and 11th, Chemistry 10th, Algebra 9th, Geometry 10th)
2 AP Classes Through Junior Year: AP Lang and AP Computer Science

Side Note: Freshman year was fantastic academically, rough patch sophomore year which messed up my GPA, and junior year has been great, getting all As first semester and about to be second semester with an honors class and 2 APs.

Senior Schedule (4 APs):

AP Micro/AP Macro
AP Calc AB
AP Statistics
Peronal Fitness
Physics

6 APs at end of high school

1900 SAT (660 CR, 620 M, 620 W)
30 ACT

I have leadership positions in about 3-5 clubs, and do a good amount of volunteer work with my church, school, and library. I am a good writer, and am confident I can write great essays. UGA is my number 1 school and I'm planning on applying early.

Feel free to let me know my chances. I'll chance back as well! GO DAWGS!

I applied Early-Admission with stats similar to yours; I got deferred and later accepted. My course rigor has been stronger than yours, but you have far more leadership positions than I did. I think you have a good shot at Regular Decision, but you might get deferred from Early Action. (I’m Class of 2017 btw.)

I think you have a good chance for regular decision. Make sure you read the admissions blog about writing admission essays. How you write admissions essays is different from writing essays in AP Language.

Definitely! I understand that they are a lot different. And I don’t know if it helps at all, but I have 2 part-time jobs that I work at a combined 20-25 hrs/week during the school year.

So you think I have a solid shot of admission in regular decision? By that, do you mean the small acceptance wave in February or the general one in March?

And if you don’t mind me asking, what were your UW GPAs? I understand if you don’t want to share.

Sorry for all the questions; I really appreciate the responses!

UW GPA 3.6
4 AP 3 dual enrollment
Many pre-AP courses

Also make sure you choose a teacher who will write you a really outstanding letter of recommendation.

I have a 3.63 UW GPA.
10 Honors Classes and 15 AP/IB Classes.

When I said RD I was referring to the March wave of acceptances. It’s great that you’re a good writer, maybe you should mention your part-time jobs in your essays.

You are in. You ACT is high and you have 6 APs. Good leadership positions.

You fall in the averages for this class. I think you might have good chances. The trend seems to be a gradual uptick in admission standards. I think you’ll be fine.

Good luck!

Appreciating the responses! Planning on taking ACT and 2 SAT II’s this summer (US History and World History).

Bumping this up as I yearn for more responses to quench my fears haha!

BUMP this up!

Go dawgs!

BUMP BUMP BUMP! Appreciating all responses!

EDIT:

Just thought I would add that my school doesn’t offer AP classes to freshman, and only one class to sophomores. In addition, my grades have shown upward trend as my classes got harder.

Please chance me, and if you could put my chances at EA vs RD that would be great!

Go Dawgs!

Hey! I know people that got in with stats like yours and lower than yours. At the same time, I know people with higher stats that didn’t get it – remember that your admissions decision isn’t solely based on numbers! You’re GPA does seem low, but remember that UGA recalculates it. But your test scores are fairly strong! So while it’s good to be confident, also stay dedicated and make sure you have a strong application. Check of the UGA admissions blog ([Advice about the UGA Admission Process](http://ugaadmissions.blogspot.com/)) for more information on admissions data, and good luck!

Yeah it’s weird I’ve heard the same things.

And yeah the GPA numbers I gave are my “UGA-recalculated” no weightings and only core classes.

Do you think solid scores on a couple of SAT subject tests should suffice? My ECs are really good: lots of volunteering, two jobs, and a side business that I run.

Thanks! Keep the chances coming!

I had a 3.4ish UW, 8 APs, a 2000 SAT (760 CR, 580 M, 660 W), and wrote great essays (<-- this is coming from someone who got that CR score without cracking a prep book open, and earned his 5 in AP Lang the same way)… Also had a great letter or recommendation (had the teacher for both AP Gov and APUSH… Had the only A and the only passing AP score in my gov class. Also took gov a year early). Had lots of leadership in one EC, won a regional academic competition, too… Got waitlisted.

But my transcript was full of grades so low that I’d prefer not to speak of them, so that’s likely why. Plus I applied RD… I know people whe got in EA who are less qualified.

My prom date had a 4.0 UW, a mid 1800s SAT score, 4 APs, decent ECs, a good letter of recommendation (she’s a suckup), and she got waitlisted as well. In the RD round.

So I’d say you have a chance, but not an especially high one. You might get accepted, but don’t assume you will.

Thanks for your input; I’m obviously not assuming anything.

After first semester of senior yr, my UW GPA should be around a 3.7 with 7 APs. Also taking the ACT in the fall so looking to get a 30-31 before the EA admission round.

It seems like your only slight problem was GPA, based on people you know do you think mine will be ok? It will be right at the middle 50%. Thanks!

It’s hard to say, for me. My school has terrible grade inflation. At my school, pretty much everyone gets a 4.0 if they want to… Hah, this probably makes you think I’m an idiot, but I’m not, just a slacker. But, I disgress.

A 3.7 with a 30 would put you in a pretty nice position, I’d say. Make SURE to apply EA, though. And they hardly reject anyone EA, either… So if you’re waiting on grades or a higher SAT/ACT score, apply EA anyway… You’ll get deferred not rejected, then you can send in your new grades and scores then.
