major choice: econ/sociology

Recently, I have visited the NU campus (flew from canada = strong interests i suppose) and talked with one of the senior admission officer there. I have been in contact with him ever since via email. I have also given him, in person, a "waitlist appeal package" filled with additional recs (counsellor/principal/research advisor) and updates to academics/ECs. Is this a norm for all waitlisted applicants or is this something that might stand out among other waitlisted applicants? I personally believe I have gone the extra mile to reflect my strong interests in NU.

So with all this being said...(sorry for long post) what are my prospects of being admitted off the waitlist?

I’m very impressed by your initiative. Coupled with your competitive credentials, I think you should be admitted off the waitlist. Honestly, what’s one more person even if they are over-enrolled (whether they are, I don’t know). I don’t have a say in admissions though obviously. No, it’s definitely not common for waitlisted students to go the lengths you did, especially the fact that you flew in from outside the country, spoke with a senior official, and came up with a waitlist package. Doing those things definitely show significant interest and investment in Northwestern, not to mention they take some guts, so I imagine you will stand out.

Regardless of the outcome, I really like your pro-active attitude! It will reward you throughout your life. Definitely keep us posted. Keeping fingers crossed for you here.

Well, you’re miles ahead of what I’ve done, and I got in RD… so…

I think that if there’s room, you’re probably going to get in. Plus, there’s all that extra stuff you’ve sent, I’ll bet that will make a difference.

Ditto. Best of luck!

Wish you the very best.
