At this point Brown is definitely very unlikely. However, if you were to raise your ACT score you would likely have a better chance.

Just because of my lower ACT?

GPA and ACT are weak. You should try to get the ACT up to at least a 30, if not a 32-33. What did you get on your AP Chem exam? If you intend to pursue chemistry, they would want to see a high score on that. Also, are they okay with you getting recs from 2 teachers in the same department? Most schools want your recommendations to be from teachers in different academic departments, regardless of your intended major.

It’s not specified. The website just says that the teacher must have taught you in an academic subject and they should know you well. I’m not gonna ask a teacher from another department if they barely know me. It doesn’t make sense. An admissions officer who came to Chicago suggested that we ask teachers who taught us in the subjects of our intended major.

I guarantee you that if you call up the admissions office at Brown or any top-tier school tomorrow, they will tell you not to pursue recommendations from two teachers from the same department. That is something that you have complete control over (as opposed to standardized test scores or GPA) which could severely hurt your chances of admission. If you don’t believe me, give their admissions office a call. They are extremely helpful.

I already talked to an admissions officer. I’ve never heard of colleges not wanting recs from the same department.

Alright first of all, if you’re talking about the very large and well known public school in Chicago that I’m thinking of, I think that your grades are very good. It seems that you’ve taken advantage of a lot of challenging courses, and Brown likes to see their applicants stretching themselves in all different directions. Your Extra Curriculars are interesting, but it might help if you had a few more (nothing you can do about that now). Your founding of the british club will be a nice thing on your app becuase brown likes to see kids be innovative and go out of their way to make things happen. I don’t think your GPA is weak, and for the record the average ACT scores range from about 29 to 34 at Brown (i asked a friend of mine, who is a student at brown). Your chances may improve if you get your score higher, but if you can’t take the test again, it’s not something to exactly freak out over. If you can, maybe just get a rec from your AP chem teacher, and then maybe a rec from a course that you really liked but had struggles in. Brown is the type of place for kids who are not super focused, and for kids who like learning, not just getting a good grade. so if you can show that you have a more broad range of interests and enjoy learning even if you have to struggle, i think your app may become stronger. but overall I’d say that you are qualified…its just a matter of whether or not you’re a competitive enough applicant!

I’m applying to ED to Brown…chance me??

If the large, well known hs in Chicago that you’re talking about is Lane Tech College Prep, then yeah :)

If you did not get what lhm185508 (god! that is tough, had to write it down) is saying, you need to really read carefully. You have a tough task ahead, need better ACT and propably improve your GPA. My sincere advice to you is to have some safeties.

Test scores are too low but everything else looks fine. It comes down to essays at this point. Good luck!

I agree with the above comments. It would be a high reach for you to get into Brown, but not impossible. Your unweighted GPA (that’s what counts most) is good, but many Brown applicants have a higher GPA. You will come out with 6 AP’s, and that is pretty good; I have heard 6-10 is a good number if one’s school has that many (the college won’t penalize a person whose school does not provide that many). Your ACT is indeed low for Brown, however, and it is quite important. Their mean is 31 (of course, it varies a little bit from year to year); 25%-75% is 28-33. That means you are sitting at their 25%–ie it would be tough, but not impossible, for you to get in (25% of admits have a lower ACT but 75% of admits have a higher ACT). Did you take the SAT? Sometimes a person does better on ACT than SAT and sometimes vice versa. I guess it is too late now if you did not. SAT subject tests are required at Brown also, I believe. Did you take those? Good luck. Be sure to apply to a few reaches, many cores, and a few safeties, and be sure you pick ones in all three categories that you would be happy attending.

Let us know if you got in and then where you are going. Under 30 ACT is too low but good luck!

Ew you go to Lane Tech? Boooo

Lol jk, a higher ACT score would help.

Low ACT low rank average ECs

Nothing special, sorry to break it to you

High Reach for Brown.

Chance back?
