Can I get in to Lawrenceville?

Im in seventh grade and the year is almost over, im studying for the SSAT in the beggining of next year. My grades are good, with all of them at A- or above, and ive received high honors every quarter of the year in 7th and 6th grade (except once in 6th grde i only got honors). I play a bunch of sports but i only play soccer competitevly, having won numerous tournements, i am condfident i can get letters of reference/recomendation from all of my teachers. i play the piano, ive been playing for three years and i am now playing some of the chopin etudes and preludes and ive won medals and prizes in various piano competition, ive won prizes in the national french exam (medals) in 6th grade. i love to read, i read books such as candide, orwell, and dostoevsky. I think i am pretty well rounded, but thats my opinion, plus my school sends around 5 students a year to lawrenceville, as the academics are well know for being advanced. i am in the top math class in my grade which is an accelerated course for Algebra 1 but we also learned about half the stuff in the algerbra 2 course, ill be taking accelerated geometry next year. I really want to go to lawrenceville and i want to know (preferably from current lawrenceville students) if the school would value somebody who got a perfect or near perfect score on the SSAT, and if you think i could get n to lawrenceville? Thank you.

As a student, it is hard to say “yes, you will be accepted into Lawrenceville.” That is the job of the admissions department. That said, you sound like a bright kid.

My advice is to keep up the good work, try your best, and come for a tour and interview in the fall (the fall is best because classes are in session and the weather is not too bad). Besides that, I do not think anyone is able to make any promises. Good luck!

@school kid, why do you want to go to Lvill so badly? It`s a great school, we both know that, but you shouldnt hold all your eggs in just one basket. You have a great resume so far. Assuming you have a great interview and a kick as essay, you may have 500 students just like you also applying. You should find 2 more schools you would like to attend just as much as Lvill. The admissions game is not predictable. Good luck

Dude-right now, you think you want to go to Lawrenceville, but what do you really know about the school besides matriculation stats and SAT scores? Research other schools in NJ (I’ll assume you’re from the NJ/Pennsylvania area) and nearby to see what your options are. Plenty of schools are just as elite and great as Lawrenceville.

In terms of NJ and Pennsylvania, Lawrenceville is pretty much the best you’re gonna get. Though there are some other schools, like Peddie and Hill, Lawrenceville is considered the best school in that area, though it wouldn’t hurt to broaden your horizons.

Who considers Lawrenceville the best?

No wait, I’ll answer that: people at Lawrenceville. Lawrenceville, Peddie, and Hill are all on the same level, if you ask me.

But don’t get me started on Hun. 15 years being involved with boarding schools and I still have nothing positive to say of that place.

I’d say lawrenceville and peddie are on close to the same level, hill is a bit below. just my opinion from research and experiences.

isnt hun mostly day?

thanks for all your advice, but i would like to point out that i want to go to lawrenceville not only for its academics, but its somewhat proximity to where i live, the drive will not be short, but i wont be boarding, and other schools in similar proximity are much worse. i also play the kaval (turkish traditiopnal flute)

Yeah, Hun has like…2 dorms? The main demographic of the school is ‘upper middle/upper class Greater Princeton area kids who couldn’t get in anywhere else’.

Every school has some smart kids, but that “5-10% Lville worthy” part should be compared to the rest of the MAPL students, who all pretty much deserve to be where they are.

What are your views on The Hill?

hun actually has 3 dorms, and yes, it is mostly day. only 30% boarding…

also, it is not mostly kids who could not get in anywhere else… the honors/AP kids could have easily done well at lawrenceville and other GLADCHEMMS schools. the kids that are mostly in normal non-advanced classes definitely fit the stereotype of rich kids of average intelligence.

also, many of the honors/ap day students at hun did not want to go to:
-princeton day school because their sports program lacks compared to hun’s
-peddie because it’s too far away for the day students who come from the new hope/washington crossing/yardley area
-lawrenceville because it’s mostly boarding
-blair because it’s too far away
-pennington because their sports program is not so great

Dayumm gurl! Hard to say this seeing I want to go there next year! No promises but I think you’re a stellar applicant! Look at Exeter and Choate too, you seem to be good material for those schools too! Can anyone chance me? You can click my name and see other posts to see my info. But seriously you should get in! Sorry if this is late…

@schoolkid: I live in the area and since my mom works in high school placement, I know a lot about Lawrenceville. (I didn’t chose to apply there- I’m going somewhere farther away.)

Honestly, you could be the most brilliant person in the world and still not get into Lawrenceville. They are looking for unique kids who are going to fit in and give something to the community. There has to be something that REALLY stands out about you. You have to have a passion. Is piano yours? You have to really emphasize that. Also, the interview can make or break you. It doesn’t matter what your GPA is- if you can’t have a fluid conversation during which you express your love of learning, your personality, and your enthusiasm for the school, you won’t get it. You have to make them believe through talking to you that you will live well with others and make their school a better place.

I would say that SSAT scores are pretty important- definitely do your best. However, I know people who got high 90s in the SSATs with straight As and didn’t get in. In fact, I know a girl who was at the top of her Geometry Honors class in eighth grade and was a violin prodigy. And I mean, prodigy. Did she get into Lawrenceville? Nope. Why? Because there are soooo many brillian Asian musicians out there. She wasn’t unique. She didn’t have something truly special.

Also, make your admissions essay really stand out! Do something out-of-the-box, and don’t be afraid to take risks with your writing. Emphasize how much you love to learn!!! At the school I applied to, the headmaster himself read all of the admissions essays. Don’t take that essay for granted- it carries a lot of weight.

I truly think that you have a great chance, don’t get me wrong. But let’s just say that you don’t get in. Because it’s hard, it really is. 1 out of the 9 kids that applied in my school got in. Here in NJ, Lawrenceville is thought to be this incredible, amazing place where only the most elite go. Have half the people that say that actually been there? No. Lawrenceville is just a big name.Have you really researched the school, or do you just know about it because of what everyone says? Even if it’s one of the best schools in the country, it might not be one of the best schools for YOU. Make sure it’s the right fit- where you go for 4 years is a huge decision, one that shouldn’t be based on just a reputation.

Keep your options open- sure, PDS, Peddie and Hun don’t have the reputations that Lawrenceville does, but that does NOT mean they are worse. Who knows- for you they might even be better. Do you like being at the top of your class? Do you like being the best at piano? I hate to break it to you, but at Lawrenceville you won’t be. If you like to be at the head of the pack, Hun. Peddie and PDS will do you well. (Actually, Peddie is a pretty elite school too…) You will shine there. If you just want to be one of many smart and talented kids, go to Lawrenceville, but expect that you could be overshadowed.

Wow, okay… that was an essay! Whatever you do, best of luck. What ever is meant to be, will happen. Good luck!!!

Sunshine your all of 15! How much experiance could you have with The Hun School or boarding school in general?

i amapplying to a school in my area, a GLADCHEMMS school, but I want to apply to exeter or andover, however my mom thinks i shouldnt board because she says shell never see me. I really wanna apply, as I think I have a chance at being excepted, how can I convince her?

Hi,
I am applying to Lawrenceville and I was wondering, what is the best way to study for the SSAT’s? Also, what are the interview questions like? Thank ou

Which school is better or more fun? Peddie or Lawrenceville? Also, if you are boarding, which school makes you feel more like at home Peddie or Lawrenceville? Thank you

Shame on you party18…thread jacking is frowned upon…make your own thread, and perhaps some people will respond to your queries. Nobody chance party18! You’ll just be condoning the fact that he jacked this thread!
