Hey everyone,

I'm a high school junior living in Virginia, and I'm looking for a school with a good computer science and engineering department (that I can get in to). Virginia Tech is my first choice school, but there's a problem: my grades suck, and my SAT score wouldn't outweigh my pathetic GPA.

Here are my stats:

SAT math: 600, critical reading: 630 (a 1230 total, but I trust you can add)

Weighted GPA: 3.3

I think I can pull off a 1280-1330 SAT score without too much trouble; I went in blind on my first attempt. But even with the best case scenario SAT score, I doubt my grades would get me in to Tech engineering.

With a 1230 and a 3.3 weighted GPA, do I stand any chance of being admitted to any department at VT? If I do, could I switch majors into engineering once admitted? Would it benefit me to strive for a great SAT score (1350+ in my book), or will my grades always cause good schools to turn me down?

I really don't want to spend two years of my life at a community college, even if it means nearly guaranteed admission to VT. I sit across the table in my physics class from a senior who has been admitted to VT and UVA, and the majority of my peers will probably follow suit. If I don't get in to Tech, I would probably go to VCU, but I would most likely end up transferring to VT as soon as possible anyway.

Thanks for your responses!
