Hi, I'm applying to UIUC and I really want to get in! Do I have any chance?

Unweighted GPA: 3.58
AP's: Biology, US History, English Literature, Physics
Honors classes: English 10, World History 10
Grades: all A's and B's, 1 C in WH Honors, 1 C in AP US History
Desired Major: CompSci/Astronomy (in the college of liberal arts)
SAT: 1930 (will take again)
Extra-currics: JV Badminton, 4 clubs, officer of 2, internship @ medical clinic, 43 service hours (plan to graduate with 60)

I live out of state. Also, I am graduating with Precalculus. In the 8th grade, I went on a trip to a country outside the US and encountered issues with my visa coming back. I was not allowed to leave for 2 months. When I came back to school, I had to retake Alg. 1 in the 9th grade because I had missed too much, even though I had a good grade.

To be completely honest, I do not think you will get in. Your GPA and test scores are way too low for computer science. Although, you are applying for the liberal arts major, so I’m not sure how much easier it is to get in that one compared to engineering. I am assuming its about the same, though.

Almost no chance for computer science but astronomy is in LAS and you have a 60/40 chance to get into LAS. Computer Science is not…but I know others who minor in it such as Anthropology/Comp Sci. I would try to get in via LAS under astronomy as I know students rejected into Computer Science with a 3.9 UW and a 33 ACT. But your ACT would convert to a 28 ACT and a 3.58 is just barely below the average of 29 ACT and 3.7 for this years students so you have a 60 percent chance if not higher to get into LAS.

Echoing what others said above: computer science is quickly becoming one of the most competitive majors at UIUC. The vast majority of majors in LAS will be far less competitive, including astronomy.
