Can I get in???

Ok,
I'm a highschool senior with a rather low gpa....

a 3.0....weighted..probably more like a 2.7 unweighted

i've taken plenty of honors/ap class's and in general done fairly well in them I have an "upward trend" meaning my grades for the last year or so are much better than my freshman grades...the main problem is my reprt cards are speckled with a a couple d's and c's every semester among the mostly a's and b's

I got a 1960 on the sat (720 V, 610 M, 630 W)

I want to go to a small, liberal art college, where people are fairly smart.
I'm interested in majoring in linguistics or history.

My EC's include lots of art related clubs and programs, an 8-week summer educational program in isreal, working as an editer of a small newspaper(not a school newspaper...a real one)...camp counceller, community service, some political clubs and activities etc

so...what are my chances??? will i get into any decent colleges or should i aim low and then transfer later??

Well, it depends on lots of things that you haven't taken into consideration.

What about class rank, SAT Subject Tests, ACT scores, your essay, your interview, legacy status, your recommendations, and your depth of involvement in your extracurriculars? Your chances also depend on which small liberal arts college you want to go to. There are lots of great small liberal arts colleges where people are very smart, but you might not know about them because they're not as famous as some others.

And why not retake the SAT if you're worried about the score? If you show your love of learning and your dedication and hard work, it will pay off.

Also, keep in mind that we don't know your chances--admissions officers sometimes accept the less-than-brilliant students and reject the simply outstanding students. You will never know unless you apply. So apply, whatever your chances are, because if you truly loved the school, you'd apply because you have a chance. And also, for many small colleges, essays are very important, and we can't assess your chances if we haven't read your essay--and we can't assess your chances even if we had.

And work on your grades while you're at it.

Remember: you can always enroll in com col or even at local state u to enhance your record, then apply as a transfer student. My S's friend did that and is now enrolled at Duke which was his dream school. Still, if you want a better school, you really need to put the brakes on those pesky "D's;" they are dream wreckers, sometimes.
