Can I get in?

Hey Guys. This is my first post so I hope I’m not doing things wrong. I copied the format btw from my buddy Jin Soul (Hope You Get into UCLA ^^).

Can someone please help me determine my chance of getting into West Point? I know I can pass the physical exams with high scores but my grades and SAT/ACT are low (Atleast for now for the SAT/ACT). I heard that West Point accepts students based on the criteria of grades, athletic ability, and leadership ability. So I’m hoping that I can still get into West Point.

• Member of Young Medical Discoverers Group of America (2years), Current President.
•Established an 8 week Tae Kwon Do program during the summer of 2008 to help introduce Tae Kwon Do to young kids
• Volunteered 250 hours at Small World Education Center. I worked on various days because transportation wasn’t always available. On average about 2-3 hours each day. Various tasks were included, but were not limited to preparing and giving lessons to preschool and kindergarten children, providing supervision during trips and at site, and supporting the full-time teaching staff.
•Been doing Tae Kwon Do for nearly 10 years now. Currently a 2nd Degree Black Belt and receiving my 3rd Degree in November.

Issue
* I know I don’t have an outstanding GPA and SAT/ACT scores. I can change the SAT/ACT scores because I’ve been studying pretty hard for them now but the GPA is the thing of the past. I can only learn from my mistakes and try harder now to set my future right.
BTW I can probably become Valedictorian if I get good a GPA during senior year. Because my school counts people with the GPA of 4.0 or higher to be Valedictorians.

Any advices or replies would be greatly appreciated.

Since GPA is a thing of the past, don't worry too much about it. I know for sure a couple of 2012ers with borderline 3.09 and 3.10s

While you have some noteable accomplishments, I do not see a school related team sport, nor do I see school leadership activities. Did I miss something? These are areas WP will be looking for.

"I do not see a school related team sport"
While the vast majority of accepted candidates are Varsity athletes, Tae Kwon Do is a full contact sport, and is an acceptable alternative if the candidate has competed and placed in competitions. 3rd Degree Black Belt is no small achievement...

requiem
Thank You for the info.

mom3boys
I couldn't really participate in school activities other than clubs because my after school time was restricted.

Ann
Thank You for the info I was wondering whether Tae Kwon Do would be accepted as an sport.

Ha! I thought I was the only Korean applying to the service academies.

You (and I) are probably not going to get a conditional offer of appointment, but judging from the class profile of the previous year, I'd say you have a very decent shot. Make sure that you explain why your after school time was restricted, because very few people (I think <10%) were appointed who didn't participate in varsity sports. Actually, most cadets/mids I talked to tell me that they were involved in 2 varsity sports. This is just a side note though, I know for fact that it's not a requirement.

aznarkarus
thanks for the info. I hope both of us makes it in.

Prep really well for those SAT and ACT retakes. Raising your scores will be a big help.

And a big congratulations on the TKD achievements. Others have received appointments with a strong martial arts background and no high school sports.

momoftwins
thanks for the info

"Ha! I thought I was the only Korean applying to the service academies."

Not likely. I'm pretty sure that the surname "Kim" outnumbered any other surname in 2009's Plebe class. :)

I heard that Koreans are the "fifth regiment".

'I heard that Koreans are the "fifth regiment".'

Make that four and a half: I speak fluent Russian.
I have a feeling that had to do something with me receiving a LOA. ;)

I hope that you get the same letter Peter.
