ok. what do you want to study? What college/school at cornell are you looking to apply to, we have 7 i think...

perhaps you don't care about location, but the admosphere difference between colgate and georgetown, and size difference between hamilton and cornell...very vast. Your geographic locations are also kind of spread out. So figure out what you want in a school other than just good academics! :) Just a thought.

If i were a homeless kid I'd want a home, not a book (sorry, couldn't resist)

ok, grades/courseload: excellent
ACT: not familiar, but thats above average for cornell, I'm pretty sure.
SATI: very good if you're not going into a math field
SATIIs: not stellar but they're allright
ECs: the real ones I'd say are tennis, band, & model UN. The others look like things you do, but not that intensely. Tennis looks great, maybe you can get recruited--visit campus and talk to the coach. What kind of band? (out of curiosity, as I play jazz)
Comm. Serv.: that book thing seems like quite an accomplishment, and teaching IN YOUR SPORT shows focus to your life--very good for app.
Awards: yea they're cool ;)

Overall I'd say you have a good chance. You could increase it by getting those SATII scores up higher.

you can always burn down the front door

Thanks sparticus for your input! Truthfully, I'm still very confused about what I want in a college. I want personal attention from professors and small class sizes but a big school to have many choices and chances to change my mind about what I want to do. Right now I'm pretty sure I want to do something related to health administration or in the field of medicine. I have always said that I want a school in a suburban location- near a city. For instance, rural VT. and Maine freak me out (don't like too much isolation) therefore I am not applying to any schools around there. I know I have to raise my SAT 2s.. will take at least one more in Oct.

It's funny that you bring up health administration, my friend was telling me the other day how Cornell has a program where if you stay an extra year before going to med school you can get a masters in Health Admin.

Quote: "ECS: Mostly tennis, I play USTA tournaments and have a eastern section ranking..."

Translation: HOT. We need you at Cornell.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Stats look good. SAT II's need work, although the fact that you did well on AP US and World makes be wonder about corresponding SATII scores...did you take the SATIIs before you finished the class possibly? If so I'd definitely take them again because with solid 4's on both APs, you should be able to do better than you did on the SATIIs.

I think cornell would be a good fit for you in terms of size. No, its no Manhattan, but its not Maine either. If you like college towns, then Ithaca is pretty damn good. And while some of the city-dwellers complain about Ithaca being in the country, i don't think 4 hours to NYC is an unreasonable distance. And you would probably fit in well with the people, since about 80% (or so it seems) of the student body consists of "white guys/girls from suburbia NY".

Hope you can get this figured out. It seems like you have your work cut out for you given the breadth of your college search. This summer is a good time to get it all together, because fall of your senior year comes quickly and goes by even more quickly. You need to have a plan so that you don't get overwhelmed by it all. Good luck.

Oh, and it's nice to see someone starting a "chances" thread that isnt a load of crap. It's like the good old days.

Hi! Cornell mom here. You are applying to many of the same schools my d applied to- including UVA-Wm & Mary-Georgtown-Rochester & Cornell. She had a 60% success rate with those schools- did not get into UVA or Georgetown. As your stats are higher- 34 ACT and as you are ranked in Tennis- I think you will be very successful in the admission game. Visit the schools- talk to kids on campus- meet with coaches if you are going to continue playing in college. Scholarship money may be available. They are all great schools. I am sure you would be happy at any one of them. Speaking like a NY parent- remember if you go into CALS-Human Ec. or ILR, tuition is around $17,000. I'm glad my d chose Cornell. It would be hard for me to justify paying more $ for UVA-Wm & Mary or Georgetown

CALS or CAS look like the college for you, correct me if i'm wrong people, as I don't know what they teach in "human ecology." CALS and HE have reduced tuition for NYCers as marny1 said.

Thanks everyone!! :) Oh and perro.. lol what do you mean by a "load of crap" chance thread? What year are you in? I have some friends at Cornell.

Also.. how are the professors? Accessible? Do they go out of their way to know their students? How big are your class sizes usually. Thanks.

What I mean by a "load of crap" (lol) chances thread is...well there are usually several defining characteristics: 1) Person is a rising junior or sophomore, i.e. they should be playing in the sandbox not posting on CC, 2) They have an insane list of EC's that no human being could actually participate in simultaneously and remain sane (usually being all state orchestra since age 2 is one of them), 3) They usually arent even interested in Cornell, but in another school, yet they post on the Cornell board.

Example: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=74663

What I was getting at is that we had been having a wave of trolls posting crappy threads, which usually resulted in myself and others flaming them. So I was just pointing out what a good chances thread should look like. You know, an actual senior who needs input on where to go next year.

Anyhow, I'm a sophomore this year.

Also, the professors are accessible. As for going "out of their way" to get to know their students, I haven't really run into too many like that. But a lot of it matters on your major and school. I mean, if you are a pre med, you probably arent going to be having a beer with the Bio101 prof after class. But if you're majoring in "Sumatran Affairs", or "African Bisexual Feminist Studies" or some other small major, then you will probably get to known the professors pretty well. Example: my friend is a dairy science major. All of the dairy science people know the head of the department. They call him "Doc". Sometimes he has them over for dinner at his house. So I guess what I'm getting at is that it really depends on your field. In my experience, I havent run into anyone that really tries to get to know their students (because all my classes are pretty big), but every professor I've had has been accomodating, open, friendly, and willing to help. And they like seeing the students take the initiative and approach them. So in my opinion the professors are very helpful to students on an individual level.
