Can I get in?

I applied to Upenn (Wharton) under early decision. With these stats do you think I will get in or maybe deferred?

SAT
Verbal: 680
Math: 710
Writing: 720
Math subject test: 660
History subject test: 640

cumulative QPA: 4.3
ranked 22 of 538

White male, one of four children including a twin going to penn state next year

student government treasurer and past vice president for two years
lead trumpet player in three band ensembles
varsity wrestler all four years
walk on varsity football player (letterman) in my senior year (wrote a good essay about this, the parting of my life in music into athletics)
Volunteer at church youth group and nursery
National Honors Society member for 2 years
9 AP's, seven this year (All A's so far) got a 4 on the english last year and a 3 on the history

I know it's a long shot but I had to ask

Your SAT scores are just a tiny bit on the lower end, and could have been higher, but it is fine as is.

Your SATII scores could have been much, much higher, especially the Math subject test since you want to apply Wharton. I’m assuming it’s Math 2. 660 doesn’t look good, it’s even lower than the 710 on your math in SATI.

I’m not sure how QPA works, and what the highest QPA in your school is, but ranked 22/538 is pretty decent.

Not a lot of significant or unique ECs from your description… However, they may be significant or important to you, so hopefully that was expressed very well in your essays.

Penn would be very high reach school for you based on the info you provided. You might get a tiny edge if you are applying from an area that doesn’t have many Penn applicants or if you live in Philadelphia. Otherwise you have no hook. Hopefully your essays and teacher recommendations were amazing. Best of luck to you!

Honestly, I don’t think you can get in unless there’s a big hook such as povety, URM, or the like. Your scores (Standarized Test and AP… 9 AP’s isn’t THAT many) are too low, and your GPA and EC’s are nothing spectacular.

Doesn’t matter what anyone says. Just hope for the best and good luck!
Just for fun:
[Countdown Clock](http://xrl.in/3t8y)

^ personally… I think 9 APs are enough to be considered a rigorous course. Students who have taken like 15 AP classes by the end of high school are just overdoing it a bit. Not many high schools even offer that many AP classes. Colleges don’t look down on students for not taking 15 AP classes when there aren’t even 15 offered. My own high school caps each student at graduating with 6 AP classes maximum even though it offers more than 6 AP classes. (only allowed to take 2 AP courses in junior year, and 4 AP courses maximum in senior year)

I wholeheartedly agree with ArceaSon. No one can tell you that you will get in and no one can tell you that you won’t. It’s not all about statistics; it is about the whole picture and that is something that cannot be shown by a simple summary. The admissions committee does their best to accept the students that they think are the best fit for the school. Hopefully it will work out for you, but if not there are plenty of other places for you to enjoy.

As with previous post, no1 can say for sure about anything but…
SAT I is meh, won’t help you, but shouldn’t hurt you

rank is gud. EC’s looks pretty normal (like every other applicant). Hopefully something stood out.

Sadly, I have to say 9 AP’s by the end of sr year isn’t very challenging. There are people who had 9 by the end of junior year

my humble personal prediction: defer

good luck

The Admissions Comittee looks at your transcript in the contxt of your high school. As long as you have taken the most rigorous courseload at your HS, you should be fine, the number taken doesnt matter nearly as much as how much you have pushed yourself. Youre top 5% which is a very good thing for Penn. The one thing I see which kinda scares me a little bit is not much leadership, and I think Wharton values it very highly…but other than that you dont look too bad!

Im applying to Wharton RD with pretty similar stats. Good Luck, hopefully Ill see ya around the quad next fall! Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/812675-p-third-power-last-chance-before-i-hit-submit.html

Your extracurriculars show a wide range of personality, which I think is great. It’s hard to balance so many things, and while some people like to pile on a bunch of different things, they can’t possibly be successful at all of them. On the other hand, you have shown musical, physical, and academic talent. It would have been nice if you had some more business related ecs though, but either way good luck!

Thank you to everyone that responded! I know it is a reach for me, but I wanted some outside perspective on my situation. As far as leadership, I was hoping the student government would help. Also, in the event I am deferred for early decision, I hope to apply through a scholarship called QuestBridge, for underpriveleged kids. I was already selected as a finalist for the college match and will make use of their regular decision process (hopefully) if I don’t get accepted. I think this should help, correct?

Side note I have had a part time job (20-25 hours a week) all through high school and worked full time (50+ hours) a week in summer. Don’t know how much that helps but there it is.

Oh I also forgot to mention that I am a national merit semi-finalist and pending finalist. Sorry, I typed up that post rather quickly, I was on my out the door
