Can I get in?

Stony Brook University is the best school I've visited so far, and I've visited many schools so far.

I was hoping that I could post some of my 'stats' and compare them to others who have gotten in, and any other advice you can give me on increasing my chances to get in. I am a female, asian, and I will be the third member of my immediate family going to college,

SAT I: 1600
Reading: 570
Math: 550
GPA: 3.7 or 92 (Weighted: 94)

I have about 90 hours of community service with out the extra 40 hours required for honor society. I am also a member of our communities Chamber of Commerce.

I feel I may be decent candidate, but with their low acceptance rate I'm afraid I will be rejected especially because of my low SAT scores. (which I am trying to improve.)
I was mainly hoping to compare my 'stats' but I completely understand if it is too personal. And if you can't please post any of you have any advice for me improving my chances.

Thank you!! :)

You have a great shot. Boost your SAT to an 1800+ and you’re in.

Your qualifications seem favorable. You will be competitive.

Just concentrate on increasing the SAT score.

Got your message; I don’t usually like to respond to these types of threads, because I never want to give anyone the wrong impression.

I’ll say this; I’d encourage you to apply, because it sounds like you’re in the ballpark. Keep it up academically, retake the SAT and/or try the ACT, and enjoy senior year!

Chris

Your EC’s and GPA are right on the mark though your SAT is lacking. Stony Brook is looking for about a 1250(m+V).

Since you have time before you apply, practice as many SAT tests as possible. I regret not doing so- I could have achieved a lot higher on my SAT.

I was accepted into the class of 2014 with the following Stats:
GPA:3.8
SAT II’s: 780-Math II, 750-Math I, 800- Chemistry
SAT I: 2050(750 Math, 630 Verbal, 670 Writing)
AP: 5- Chemistry, 5-Calc BC(5 AB Sub), 4-Macro, 4-Stats, 4- Physics Mech
EC’s: Martial Arts, Community Service, EMT certified(not sure I mentioned that)
Essays: Could have been better.
NYS Resident- Advanced Regents Diploma

Good Luck!

Thank you guys so much, and I will definitely start working harder on my SAT scores :)

I got into stony brook and I had an 1280 old SAT and an 80% at best high school GPA (but like a 92% exam average) and absolutely no extracurricular activities and I’m a white male. You should be fine.

My brother got in with a 2070 SAT but 2.7 GPA and only 1 extra curricular (fencing, which I don’t think they even have…)
You’re definitely in if you can bring up your GPA, but I think you have an okay shot even as you are.

agree with the posters above, get that SAT in the 1750-1850 range, and your in.
