Can I get in?

I'm wondering what my chances are to get into Emerson. I'm applying Early Action. It's my reach school and my first choice if I can somehow work it out financially (I know that I will probably be paying off my loans for years, but from what I have observed about the school, it's worth it).

My weighted GPA is 3.327. I'm not really sure what it is unweighted.

My SAT scores are:
Reading - 650
Math - 610
Writing - 710

I'm currently working on my essay, but I think it will be good. It's pretty unique, so hopefully that will be helpful when admissions reads it.

My extra-curricular activities are competitive baton twirling (for nine years; I elaborated on this in the short answer section of my application), Library Council, Latin Club, Book Club, and Art Club. I also have volunteered at my Sunday School as an assistant (which included writing and directing the last two Christmas pageants), for my baton twirling team as an assistant coach, and at the International Fringe Festival in New York. I have work experience as a camp counselor and I am currently working after school in my school's preschool. This summer, I participated in the National Student Leadership Conference's Education and the Classroom program.

I'm applying to the Theatre Education program and most of my theatrical resume consists of things I did prior to high school. My essay to get into the program is really solid and clearly illustrates my desire and my potential for that program, but I'm not sure if my lack of recent experience will be a real issue.

If anyone can let me know what they think my chances are, please let me know. :)

My D is a Freshman this year, are you theater studies acting? If so your audition will be very much a deciding factor. Also if you can try to improve your gpa. But I think you have a very good chance. Good luck!

Sorry for the delayed response, but no, I am just Theatre Education. I have to write an essay and submit my resume to get into the program though, so I think that those will probably be a big deciding factor. I don’t know if it’s factored into my overall GPA, but Emerson does require first marking period grades, and I did really well. I hope that they’re able to see how my grades have gotten progressively better throughout my high school career.

That is great colleges love to see improvement in gpa. I’ve seen a lot of postings about Emerson not giving a lot of fin. aid, but they gave my D close to 1/2 COA. So good luck!

Hi. Just saw your post about Emerson. My D is a junior theatre student at an arts HS and Emerson looks beautiful. I can see the academic requirements on their web. Can you tell me anything about Acting admissions (probably BFA)? There IS an in-person audition, right? How much weight do you feel is given. Any feedback from your D’s first year…?

thanks!!!

Sorry about the delay, but I had not logged into the site for a couple of days. My D is totally crazy about Emerson. Seems it was a perfect fit for her. Theater acting BFA or BA there is a required live audition, from what they told my D it seems to be about 50% and 50% grades etc. But from what we were told grades can get you rejected even with a great audition. If accepted into BFA you cannot do a Minor, and they have a cut Sophomore year (you will still be in acting but not BFA). My D chose BA in case she decided to do a Minor. Also it seems that they will have a lot of work Freshman and Sphomore years. They do not get to act in official productions, but have to work backstage for 3 weeks each semester between like six to ten hours a day. D said it was stressful, but she learned so much that she really enjoyed it.

So, we most definitely have the same GPA and SAT score… weird! A 3.3/1970 are my scores exactly, but I applied for WLP. Good luck!
