Hi! I am paranoid of not being able to get into masters program. I want to do masters in international relations. I went to community college and then transferred to four year state university. My GPA is 2.8 and I am not sure if I can get into any graduate program. I do not have any extra curricular activities. I am foreigner first generation college student. I came to United States when I was 15 with my parents not knowing anything. Is there any hope for me?
Are you saying you already graduated from a 4-year university with a 2.8 GPA?
There are graduate programs that will accept you, even with a 2.8 GPA, bu they will be lower-tier schools.
Fall will be my last semester. I am going off with the realistic GPA but the best I can possibly get is 2.95 with straight A’s till I graduate. I am also worried that lower-tier schools will not land me a good job. Could that also be the case?
I am not an expert in international relations. My impression is it’s hard to get a good job in IR even with a graduate degree from a good school. So I would think getting a good job with a graduate degree in IR from a lower-tier school would be difficult.
Getting into a good IR master’s degree will be a challenge with a 2.8 GPA.
At many IR programs, the most competitive candidates have some work experience in the field first, and that can offset the impact of a low GPA. I would try to get some work experience in international relations first - you don’t need a master’s to begin work in the field.
