Can I get into a top 20 school with a 3.65

I'm not going to write out all of my stats at this time; I'm just curious as to whether or not it's possible for me to get into a top 20 univ with a 3.65.

Class rank plays a big part in that.

I have a similar GPA, but it puts me in the top 5% of my class. Colleges won’t punish you for going to a tough school, if that’s the case.

What rank do you need?

You need to be in at least the top 5%, really top 2 or 1% to be competitive at most of the top 20 schools. Top 10% may be enough for a few of the top 20 schools such as emory and Notre dame

It depends on the applicant…
I know a black guy who went to my below average public school, wasn’t in the top 10% of the class, and he got into Berkeley and U Chicago.
I was only in the top 8% at that same awful school and I got into Midd.
Actually, plenty of private school kids aren’t in the top 10% though and get accepted into even the best colleges.
Don’t stress about it… a 3.65 probably won’t rule you out automatically… unless you’re not in the top quarter of your class lol

What if your school doesn’t rank?

Are you one of the handful (i.e. top ten) of achieving scholars in your school? Is your school known for grade deflation? If not, then your goals of top-20 are extremely unlikely – even if you get top ACT/SAT scores. Please make an appt w/your guid counselor and prepare a great list of schools to target. Best of luck to you.

Colleges can tell what your rank is based on the school profile, even for those that don’t rank.

So, just to clarify, a 3.65 unweighted at a competitive school would not be enough?

Yes. I had roughly a 3.65 and was accepted to several top 20 universities. Granted, I had a 2300+ SAT score and 750+ on all my SAT subject tests. I’m also an Asian male.

Schools that don’t rank still provide a rough idea of the GPA distribution, which allows a rough estimate of your rank.

A 3.65 UW GPA at a competitive school would not be enough if a lot of your competitors are doing better than you. If you’re near the top of the pack, it could be enough.

Don’t let US News tell you where to go to school, decide for yourself.

@BobWallace:

It would be nice if more people on here thought like you. I’m at a top-20 school right now, but I’m not there because of the ranking. Actually, I don’t recall knowing it was a top 20 school until after I enrolled (granted, I knew it was selective). I’m there because it fit me best out of the schools I visited.

Class Rank also depends on the context of your school. Top ten percent is fine for a highly competitive public (maybe closer to top twenty-thirty for a private), but if you go to a school that is less rigorous you want to aim for top 1-2%.

No. “Private” doesn’t mean “highly competitive.” And it surely doesn’t mean “more competitive than even the most competitive public schools.” It means “students pay to attend this school.”

My public high school was more competitive than any of the private schools in the area.

YES! Your not a shoe in by any means, but you got a good shot. Apply to where you want, but make sure your stats aren’t ridiculously far away from the middle 50% stats and scores, otherwise, you wont look too competitive.

jetsfan wrote: “but you got a good shot” Given you don’t know this person’s scores and the context of his GPA, why do you say that? Even if you do, what do you mean?

What is a good shot for a school that admits 7% of applicants (Yale e.g.)? Would you consider “good” better than 7%? If you deem this person having a better than a 7% chance, they you’re saying this person is indeed better than the typical Yale applicant. Is this what you’re saying?

“you got a good shot” should not be uttered for near anyone when talking about a top 20 school. Especially someone with a projected 3.65 GPA.

@redseven

That was in reference to elite private schools (i.e. ivy feeders such as andover). Of course, your typical private school will require you to perform top in your class to have a chance at the “top 20” universities.

it just wouldn’t help you. In fact, I personally think a 3.65 is killer…mostly because I have a 4.0

dont trust me though since i am biased
