I want to apply early action to a good college but i need your opinions before i send the application. I was on the Varsity tennis team for my entire high school career and was a captain this year and last. I've had a job as a tennis instructor at the local yacht club since i was a freshmen. I am a talented piano player and enjoy playing at the local senior home as well as volunteer there. Ran on the varsity cross country team for 2 years. I am on the debate team. I play clarinet on the school marching band. I have also volunteered extraneously throughout High school. I also scored a 2340 on the SAT and a 36 on the ACT. I have gotten an 800 on the biology E/M SAT ii. My essay i have prepared is also very powerful and explains my poor freshmen grades.

I just want an opinion if i have a good chance at any of the IVY League schools. Also can somebody tell what GPA that comes out to be.

You have a good chance of getting into at least one Ivy.

you have a shot at Cornell, but your ECs arent that great.

I forgot that im part of the national honors society

That’s doesn’t help. Almost everyone is in NHS. Instead of Ivies, you should try to apply to colleges in Cali. They don’t look at freshman grades.

You have a perfect ACT and near perfect SAT. Your grades show drastic improvement and the whole captain+piano+extreme volunteering thing is very impressive. Do you come from a well off home?

Cornell is a bit of a high match/low reach. The other ivy’s would be more reach schools.
I don’t know if band counts as an academic class, so without it your GPA is around like 3.73. That being said, your grades show an upwards trend, which is a good thing.

Your ACT score will make you a very competitive applicant at whatever college you apply to. Contrary to what other people say, I think your ECs aren’t bad but they aren’t really great either. Your GPA is a bit below average so I think whether you get in or not depends a lot on the quality of your essays. Like the previous poster said, if you sell your extracurriculars, you might have a chance.

But what’s the big deal about going to an ivy? There’s a lot of good schools you should consider that may be better than some ivy league schools in certain subjects. For example, UC Berkeley has a top 5 engineering program and they don’t look at freshman grades (even as OOS you have a very good chance of getting in there). So idk I think you should keep that in mind.

not really. lower middle class so I had to get a job. no complaints though.

Thanks for the comment bluewizard. Berkeley is also one of my top choices.

Not to be mean, just snarky :wink:
How’d you get a 2340 with that use of the word “extraneously”?? You do realize that word means irrelevant… right?

I know I meant to say they are insignificant

Then why would you put that in there? haha jw…

yeah but what is the best possible school it would be worth applying to?

@BlueWizard97‌
He has very weak extracurricular activities and only good statistics. With that, along with no one really being able to call a top-tier school a “match,” I don’t see how Cornell is even close to a “high match” for him.

where do you go to school

I made a college confidential account (again, I forgot my old one) to respond to your seemingly spiteful post.

I do not know where you go to college (I assume you are in college, although you may be a high school student or a parent/other), but based off your posts, you seem to be quite fitting of the “typical college confidential user,” one that criticizes others to ultimately feed his/her own ego.

The typical college confidential response often includes something along the lines of “oh, your extracurricular activities are weak…I highly doubt you’re going to get in,” and often act as a way to crush the enthusiasm of other competitors. I think that these kinds of posts, along with the posts that come from users who try to show off their grades, unless they are truly necessary (in the case of an arrogant fool who doesn’t understand his or her place, it is necessary…so that the person can experience a reality check), should be avoided. As users reading posts of students desperately trying to earn a place in “prestigious colleges,” I think that we should all be supportive and understanding; we need to give these all of these students a break, ones who are often “slowly dying” as they fight against others students for grades.

A couple of years ago, I was a high school student as well, asking for other people to chance me so that I could find out if I have a shot at some competitive colleges. Before entering the world of “college confidential,” filled with arrogant, pompous, superficial students/parents/others, I was a sheltered and innocent boy, just hoping to get into a decent college. After joining this site however, my world totally flipped around, and I began to understand what man’s true nature is (behind a computer screen). When I asked users to chance me on some decent colleges, with my scores and grades in a very similar range (2350 36 ACT, etc), your kind of response was the only one I would get. Often times, people say that posts like yours are out of envy/jealousy, or a multitude of other reasons; I however, disagree, and believe that some people are just pessimistic and want to pull others down as well. You are not in a position to truly gauge whether or not a person has a shot at prestigious ivy’s because you do not affect college decisions (I admit, neither do I, but I do not make such claims as yours). I acknowledge the fact that you might be being blunt, to provide a reality check for this student, but wouldn’t it be better to encourage this student, giving him advice on how to improve his extracurricular activities, or perhaps some ways to get into Cornell? Your response only contained pessimism and criticism, with absolutely no way of helping the original poster; you can improve a person’s life by giving them a form of “active criticism,” which incorporates ways of criticizing others, but also giving tips that help.

Your post on this thread isn’t your only post that sounds like this; I’ve lurked on some other threads where you give off an envious and spiteful feeling as well. Perhaps this is your way of being blunt, which, in that case, I’m sorry, but please do try to be more helpful next time, with crushing the hopes and dreams of successful students such as the opening poster.

With the above being said, I believe that @Bob0LI has a decent shot at Cornell. They value high scores and GPA’s, seeing how a lot of my peers (from years ago) got in with “decent” ECurriculars and high grades/SAT’S/ACT’S. I have to leave now, but I will be editing this post further to provide some helpful insight, and also to tell you ways to improve your EC’S (chance you as well, although I believe you have a pretty good shot at Cornell).

Sorry, I had to rush this post a bit, I have to leave laptop…

For those that are probably wondering…
I did get into Cornell, but I ultimately chose Harvard for my undergraduate studies (Class of 2008)

We all “are not in a position to truly gauge whether or not a person has a shot at prestigious ivy’s because you [we] do not affect college decisions.” By your logic, this sub-forum should be shut down. People can not come here expecting sugar coated responses. They have to be realistic - especially about universities with acceptance rates < 20%.

I appreciate the response ArrogantFinance, I know my chances are low. I wanted to ask if it would be worth applying.

@Bob0LI‌
It’s definitely worth applying to a few of them.
