Can I get into Babson?

Hi, I am a junior and am interested in applying to Babson. I go to a really good public school, and tend to get Bs and A-'s. I will graduate with 11 AP Classes. My GPA is a 3.61 UW and a 4.17W and a 31 on the ACT. (I might retake it in June) I went to Babson’s summer camp, and have really good EC’s, I am apart of several volunteer boards, have a job, went on a scholarship based religious tolerance program, and am the VP of one of the biggest clubs at my school among a few other things. I really want to go to Babson because I am interested in Business and technology, and they have a major that allows you to get a degree from Babson and Olin college (just a major I am thinking about) Do you think I can get in with my stats? I read on the Babson website that the average student accepted had a A- to B+ GPA (Middle 50 Percent?) and a 28-31 ACT (Middle 50 Percent?) Not sure what middle 50 percent means but I think my stats a little bit above average and my essays are pretty good.

Also as a note my gpa is extremely low because of my slow start freshman year because I moved across the country. , I lived with my mom only and it was a diffcult transition for me (I normally live with my grandparents older brother/sister and dad) 2nd Semester I went from All B’s and a C to All A’s and a B.

Its funny, because you sound EXACTLY like me. I’m interested in both Business and Technology, and wanted to do a dual concentration at Babson in both IT Management and Strategic Management. I suggest working really hard to bump up your ACT score. A lot of the people that were accepted this year seemed to be in the 33-35 range.

@DrummerGenius really? Then how is the middle 50 percent from last year so low compared to this year? The people on hear are a super small sample size of all applicants so that doesn’t mean my ACT is necessarily low. I am pretty sure I can raise it to a 33 as I took the ACT June of Sophmore year with like a week of studying and got a 31. I am pretty sure for Babson you just need a solid GPA and a good act score with some business like things on your resume, such as a job at an office, attending business summer camps, etc. I read somewhere babson considers if you have a job and it really boosts your app.

Look at the accepted ED applicants forum from this year. Some students posted their stats, and their ACT was in the 33-35 range. I got a 31 my first time too without even knowing the format of the test, I focused on the SAT. Just study hard for the ACT, write good essays, and keep doing what you’re doing. That’s the best any of us can do. I’ll let you know if I get accepted in the RD round. I got deferred with similar EC’s and grades/scores.

My son with better stats/similar ECs got deferred this fall. Apply ED if you can, and if you score 34 ACT up you have a chance EA.

@RightCoaster I want to go to Babson, and am planning on applying ED as I already made up my mind that Babson is the college I want to go to, did your son apply EA or ED? I think I can get my GPA up to a 3.83UW and a 4.31W if I get all As this semester, my ACT can probably be in the 32-33 range if I study the english a little more. I have a job at a trademark office as well, which should help alot. I miscalculated the amount of APs I was taking senior year.

@DrummerGenius Thanks, I think you should get in if you can raise your ACT. Can you let me know what your ECs were, I still have junior year summer to beef up my resume so what should I do?

@Sterny16 Check out my ‘Chance Me’ thread for my EC’s. Sadly, I didn’t take the ACT any earlier. I actually took it on a whim. I only focused on the SAT, and got a 1370. I don’t have another chance to boost my score, but considering 31 is in a range of a lot of my schools, I’m not concerned. I’m lucky enough to be in a state with a great state college with a fantastic business school, so I have a fall back.

I’m honestly not worried about Babson at this point. I would try and do something heavily business related (summer internship at an accounting firm or something like that.) There are definitely some weaknesses of Babson (I’ve talked to a lot of Babson alumni, and my sister goes to Wellesley.) I still love the school, but maybe getting deferred was the best thing to happen to me. I’ll let you know what happens in mid-March :).

Curious to know what happened @DrummerGenius
