Can I get into Binghamton?

This is a repost from the Chances forum, but I thought maybe you guys could help me:

I visited Binghamton's open house today, and I really like the college. The problem is, I'm really not sure if I'll make it in or not.

3.36 cummulative GPA (I believe; missed NHS by a few points)

SAT:
630 Writing (hopefully going up when I get my next results, didn't really do too well on the 20-minute essay)
590 critical reading (disappointing, also hopefully going up with new SAT results)
450 Math (awful, I know; I just don't get Math at all. probably not much of a chance for a major change here)

Extra-curriculars:
Varsity Cross Country, 10th/12th
Indoor Track, 11th
Varsity Tennis, 12th
Photo Club, 10th
SADD, 12th
School newspaper, 10th/11th/12th
Youth in Government, 10th/11th/12th
Young Progressives, 11th/12th President

Honors/AP classes:
AP US History (3...)
English 10H, 11H, English 12 AP (AP score TBD, but it won't really matter because it's in May)
Spanish V AP (same as above)

And I doubt it means much, but my uncle and aunt are both alumni, as are 2/3 of my teachers writing recommendations (and they love me). I feel pretty lackluster; I definitely should have been trying as hard as I am now throughout all of high school. Would a good essay help me out a lot?

Also, white male, single mother with lower income, elligible for a lot of financial aid probably if that means anything with regard to actually getting into the school.

In addition, I'm also looking at SUNYs Purchase, Albany, and New Paltz, but I'd really love to be able to get into Binghamton.
AdamGoebler is online now

Binghamton is a definite reach but since they are rolling admissions, apply soon. On the other hand, retake the SATs because your stats are well below the Binghamton average.
Several of the other SUNYs are less competitive and well worth applying to.

Thanks. By the way, what exactly is rolling admissions?

The earlier your application is received the better chance you have of acceptance. Early applicants are evaluated as applications are received.

New SAT scores:

Critical Reading 640
Math 490
Writing 680

I still suck at Math, but I'm pretty happy that I've improved in all three categories.

Too bad writing doesn't count this year. You have a shot even though your SATs are well below the Binghamton average (in the 1240s I believe). Apply ASAP. Hopefully you have several matches that you are interested in.

By matches do you mean safety schools? I'm pretty oblivious to all of this college stuff, so my apologies. And thanks again for your response.

Edit: Also, are you sure the writing section doesn't count? Here's what it says on Binghamton's website:

Factors considered for admission to Binghamton University include the following in order of importance:

Academic record (grades, rigor of courses, rank in class, standardized test scores)

* Students are required to submit scores from the new SAT with the writing section or the new ACT with writing test

Binghamton will be using the writing section this year for research purposes only.

My DD had very similar stats (graduated from HS in 2010) and got waitlisted. If you are from outside of NY, you have a better chance with these stats.
