Can I get into Binghamton?

I am going to be a high school senior in the fall of 05. Right now Binghamton is my top choice for school but I am really worried that I won't get in. Mostly I am worried about my class rank, SATS and course load. I have an 1190 on the new sat and i'm taking them once more. Should I take the ACT? My gpa should be good ( find out in the fall) but I am more concerned about the fact that I don't have that many honors and AP classes. I do go to a pretty competitive public school though. Therefore my rank will not be that high...top 20 percent maybe. I know that my school district is highly regarded especially to nys schools. I know that binghamton is becoming more and competitive...so what are my chances of getting into Binghamton? what can i do to get in?!?!

Your SATs are about 50 points below the average and your projected GPA may also below the average. You have a shot but need to find several match and safety schools. Good luck!

It'll be tough. You might look at Oneonta, Geneseo (which can be as tough to get into as Binghamton) and New Paltz. For larger schools like Bing, your chances are better at Albany, Buffalo and Plattsburgh.

do u go to binghamton or know people who do? what can i do to get in?

I know somebody with an sat score below yours and they got into Bing. They are not even instate, but they do have a 4.0 from a small private hs. I think the 4.0 gpa must have really mattered!

when i went to visit bing i had the feeling that they wanted more out of state students. maybe that worked to their advantage. also, the person who got a 4.0 gpa..did they have many honors and ap classes?

LiR8 that is interesting bcs I thought oos was a disadvantage esp. since she is from NJ ( not like it is a western or midwest state). The school she went to was SO small that I doubt they offered manyAPs etc., but I just do not know.

What did they tell you about wanting oos? Are they going easier on oos applicants at a state school?

I was under the impression that having the 4.0 is what got her in.

basically, one of the admissions officers said that they were letting in more oos because they are aiming for a more diverse student body (??) there was a kid from CA and he practically said he was a shoe in. CA is different from NJ obviously. im sure the 4.0 was what got her in...maybe they are just trying to get more oos in.

northeastmom- you mentioned some other state schools..besides buffalo what do you know about those schools? i'm interested in other private and oos state schools but mostly want to go to suny school b/c of price tag!!

yeah, the kid from Ca. is probably a shoo in. Maybe they are trying to increase the oos stats though. NJ would count for oos.

yea. i guess that isn't good for us instaters tho :( do you have kids in high school or any kids in college?

LIR8 you could pm Marny. She and her husband are products of Sunys, so she knows more than I do. I do know that Geneseo, Stony Brook, and Bing are the most competitive. Geneseo I believe is the most isolated of those. Some kids pick Albany or Buffalo, although less competitive the city is available and that attracts some good students who do not want to pay more for the privates (or cannot), and want an education without isolation. Most kids, from all I have read, honestly are not thrilled with any of Suny schools (cold weather, ugly campus, large lectures), but like the price tag.

I have a rising senior and we are from oos and he will apply to Bing and Albany (Buffalo is too cold and far).

The Suny you choose should be strong in the areas you are thinking of majoring in.

If I was waitlisted and got in, I'm sure you can get in.... with some effort.

AFireInside530- can i ask what our stats are or what they were?

Does anyone know how the business school is at Bing?

The School of Management gets good marks in the New York City area but only there; outside of NY, no one knows about it and no one seems to want to. There are much better b-schools are other comparable state unis such as Penn State, Delaware, Indiana, Uconn, UVM, Colorado and Florida, for example, that enjoy greater reputations, especially nationally. However, you need to apply directly to the School of Management if that's what you're looking for and the criteria for admission are higher than that for Harpur A&S. If you apply to Harpur and plan to then transfer into the School of Management, you'll need at least a 3.5 or better since the competition to get into it before junior year is quite stiff, especially from those transferring from other SUNY schools, especially the ones with the two-year degree programs such as Cobleskill and Delhi. Just because you're already at Binghamton doesn't mean you'll get into the School of Management.

Collegeparent thank you

1170 Sats
9 Ap Classes with a 3.2 GPA (unweighted. my school did not weight grades at all)
lots of ECS
3 Recommendations

Hm... After a year of college i tend to forget lol.

It was good enough to get me in to there and 2 other colleges off the waitlist.. including Boston U and the Univ. of Maryland College Park. I ultimately chose Bing however.

I've heard that in order to be competitive to transfer into the school of management (this is from admissions a admissions counselor) that you need around a 3.8-4.0 GPA

If my child applies to the Binghamton School of Management, and does not get in, will it hurt her chances at Harpur? Binghamton is her first choice, and she doesn't want to ruin her chances by applying directly to SOM.

Stats
SAT 1320
