Can I get into Brown?

To put it short, I only have a 1280 and low sat II scores, one in 600’s and two in 500’s, but I am really not that stupid, I am taking them again in january. By the way, will any colleges accept Sat II scores in january. I hope so. I also have a 3.8 uw 4.0w,5ap classes, all honors classes, 2 comm. college classses taken, and taking 5 more this year, 3 this semester…do i have a shot? I would appreciate any opinion.

brown will overlook sat scores

but you need to be solid otherwise

your grades sound fine but what about ec's and rec's?

can you write? if so were your essays qual?

gwb

derailing, but what if i'm the opposite? excellent scores, ECs, recs, amazing essay... but 3.3 uw gpa (lots of ap classes though) and 4th decile rank at a really competitive pub school? grade trend of 3.0 w --> 4.6w (1st quarter grades sr year!)... brown only took 2% of applicants with my rank and below last year :(

http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Admission/gettoknowus/factsandfigures.html

as you can see (assuming your splits were an even 640/640)

12.2 and 11.9 % (verbal and math respectively) were accepted

thats not bad, what you do also have to remember though is that some of those are going to be kids who have an 800 math and just don't speak anything but physics or chem....
knowing your splits would help

So_D

I am in the same boat

blegh, wish I had known what all this was about before this year, senior grades rox

have barely slept this week, next week might kill me

Those figures are probably so high because so few people with those scores apply because they are aware of their limitations, so the very few accepted with those scores are among the very few applying with the scores. The actual number of applicants with 1280 who are accepted is probably very, very low. Example: 50 apply with 1280, and 5 are accepted. So that's 5 accepted out of 50 with the same scores, giving 10%, but 5 out of the 15,000 or so who apply... you get the point.

In conclusion, your chances are terrible. Definitely less than 1%.

what about me, cbomo?

actually cbomo your a little off
2,271 applied in the 640 verbal range 276, thats a 12.2% admittance rate...
not too too bad, and 2,271 is a statistically significant number...
so i would disagree
GWB

276 accepted out of 15,286 applied last year means there's a 1.8% chance of him getting in according to last year's stats.

There's no hope for you, Delirious. I'm sorry.

"There's no hope for you, Delirious. I'm sorry."

Bah. How did the other people with rank <= mine get accepted?

Absolutely incredible EC's and essay would be my guess.

your point seems kinda flawed, you can only compare him to people we can somehow draw a 'line of best fit' to

we can use sats
and we can use grades
check that out
GWB

So maybe I have a shot, cbomo...

Do you think I'll be deferred or outright rejected?

You're way too idealistic to be telling these people that they actually have legitimate chances to get into Brown. Seriously, the fact is their chances are not worth them applying, and telling them otherwise is cruel, frankly, even if it does makes them happier.

As I see it cbomo the only only weakness in my application is rank - i have great everything else - i've gone from a 3.0 to a 4.6, i have a 1490, i have a 763 sat2 average, i have ECs that are unique, and my essay was really cool (I'll send it to you if you're interested, IM me) - so will the rank issue alone mess me over? ugh, my school is so crazily competitive. i hate rank!

Oh, before all you indicated was your rank. Ok, you have a chance.

3.0 to 4.6... well, all they care about is your unweighed cumulative GPA, so that 4.6 doesn't matter that much.

ah well my cum UW gpa is like 3.3-3.4 ... upward trend ... tons of AP courses and stuff.

Nobody here is an admissions officer, so I think you should apply if you really have the desire to be at Brown. A 1.8% chance is better than a 0% chance!

They look for a certain type of person. Your essay + what you do outside of school, = super important than what your scores are. I'm not saying SAT and GPA aren't important, but they like to look at you as a person, not a statistic.

Hopefully. I dunno if you guys are talking to me or not, because I already applied ED -- 9 days! Ack.
