I am going to be a sophmore in high school next year and I want to know if I have a chance at getting into CMU. I would like to get into the College of Computer Sciences or the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Last year I got a 4.0, and expect to easily maintain a 3.75 or higher for the next three years. Unfortunately I won't know my class rank until part way through my junior year, but I believe I am in the top 5. I have only taken the SAT once in 8th grade. I got 470 reading, 650 math, 520 writing, 6 on the essay. As you can tell with my essay score, I'm horrible at writing, so I can't depend on my essay to get me in.

I agree its to early to be too concerned with this, but I'll be helpful anyway.

Firstly, wheres AP Comp Sci on your course list >_>

ok not super important, since I'm guessing your highschool doesn't offer it since otherwise you would probably have wanted to take it since you want to go into CS. However if you could take an introductory cs class on the side at a local college or something that would certainly look good as you would be showing interest and would be going above and beyond.

assuming you take that very rigorous schedule, do well, and do well on the sats when you take them for real, you'll have a good shot.

You need some ecs though, you didn't list any, so I'll just assume you didn't so any freshmen year, if you did, great continue those, if not then its not to late to start 3 years is still good.

May I suggest, math team, science team, speech and debate, some sort of after school music thing ala marching band or jazz band etc, these are good ecs that you may be interested in. Also joining a sport is good. I did swimming in highschool, and enjoyed it, even though I wasn't to great at it since I'm not that athletic by nature, never was able to break 30 seconds, came the closest sophomore year actually(all my progress was erased each year during the off season since I just stopped swimming for 9 months after the last meet, kinda regret that now)

If you're looking for cool stuff to do, another idea is to ask your school if you can help them out by writting some sort of program for them (well, if you know programming, or if you're willing to learn). Since that's what you're interested in, not only would you be helping out your school, it would give you a chance to do something cool, and it would let you show initiative and your programming skills on the application. I did this (although it was in 12th grade, so I didn't actually write about it on the application), and ended up doing a lot of database work for my school which they really appreciated.

But yeah, way too early to be asking for chances...
