Ok,
I'm a highschool senior with a rather low gpa....

a 3.0....weighted..probably more like a 2.7 unweighted

i've taken plenty of honors/ap class's and in general done fairly well in them I have an "upward trend" meaning my grades for the last year or so are much better than my freshman grades...the main problem is my reprt cards are speckled with a a couple d's and c's every semester among the mostly a's and b's

I got a 1960 on the sat (720 V, 610 M, 630 W)

I want to go to a small, liberal art college, where people are fairly smart.
I'm interested in majoring in linguistics or history.

My EC's include lots of art related clubs and programs, an 8-week summer educational program in isreal, working as an editer of a small newspaper(not a school newspaper...a real one)...camp counceller, community service, some political clubs and activities etc

so...what are my chances??? will i get into any decent colleges or should i aim low and then transfer later??

You can definitely get into college. You won’t, as I think you know, be able to get into the tippy top schools, but there are some pretty neat schools (especially LACs) out there that you still have a shot at. Some thoughts:

Note: I’m not sure if all of these schools have linguists, but they do all have history.

Also, some of these schools have rather unique academic programs, and a correspondingly alternative/artsy student body, so you’ll want to look into each closely to make sure you’d be happy there.

Bard and Hampshire might be a good reach schools for you, if you like their programs. your GPA is significantly below the average at both, but your SATs are in range, and they are both known for forgiving lower grades if you have something else to offer, and I’d imagine they (and really any school, but it won’t make up for your grades at all schools) would be rather impressed with the fact that you edit a non-school newspaper.

Some high match type schools (SATs are in or above range, GPA a bit below average): Evergreen State, Goucher College

You might want to also look into the book “Colleges That Change Lives,” where you will probably find some more reasonable reach and match suggestions.

i'm in the same boat, though your ECs are probably more impressive than mine are. Good luck :)

as the above poster said, Bard and Hampshire are good schools. Bard is much more of a reach than Hampshire is, but I'm applying to both of them. Just make sure your essays are incredible and you have a shot at either of them.

with a score of 1960 you have a good shot at many schools.......do not underestimate what you can do. My cousin in a simliar situation last year, ended up with about a 3.2 gpa, despite some early high school mishaps with her grades, but got a 1920 on the SAT and did well on her SAT's, she got into BU, GW and was waitlisted at NYU where she eventually was taken off the waitlist and is now a student at NYU!! So there is a success story for you.......those high SAT'S will help you a lot. Good luck!!

"yes! Every one can attend community college."

and everyone can attend a 4 year university. what state are you from? you probably can get into the 2nd tier state school (for example, CSU in California, Ohio University in Ohio, Montclair State in NJ, etc.) These could be inexpensive options which would work out fine if you stayed 4 years--but also school where you could transfer from if you wished.

You could also look at some privates, but I don't really think that the middling privates (where you would be looking at) are worth the money--unless they give you FA. Why go to some 2nd tier LAC that no ones ever heard of for $35,000+ a year?

Thanks for your input.....financial aid is not a huge issue, theres money put aside for my college....and i'm really not interested in going to a huge state school, i want to have small classes and be able to know everyone at my school. A few questions though...

What should I write about for in my essay?? everyone keeps saying "don't worry about it just write a killer essay" but that's easier said than done....It makes me so nervous to even start writing it...

also I thnk i'm going to defer for a year and do americorp...should i tell colleges this somwhere in my application or just tell them once i'm accepted. Would this help or hinder my liklihood of acceptance?
