Leadership:
- co-captain of basketball team in 7th and 8th grade
- head of my division in camp
- I was handpicked by a group of teachers to act as an advocate/mentor to the 8th graders of a middle school and talk to them about the high school experience. We discussed with them how to cope with the difficulties and stress of high school and acted as a guide on how to make the most of their experiences.

What are my chances of getting into Cornell if I apply early. My counselor said I'll get into NYU and Brandeis, so I have some good backups.

I will also be captain of the chess team next year, if that matters at all.

I think you have a decent shot of getting in to Cornell. However, you can never be 100% sure with Cornell because it is still an Ivy and admissions can be really unpredictable. Good luck!

I think you have weak chances at Cornell. Your SAT is weak, and you don’t have any great ECs

Your SAT scores all fall well within Cornell’s inner quartile range (25%-75%) except your English/reading is 10 points below the 25th percentile. It is possible for you to get in with those scores, but only if you add some OUTSTANDING EC’s, and have a nearly perfect essay.

On the other hand if you raise your SAT’s a bit you would be a very competitive applicant. No one can tell you for sure, but work on the SAT and see what happens. Good Luck!

Thanks guys. I really hope I get the 800 on math next time to compensate for my reading score, and I plan on applying early so it will hopefully boost my chances. I appreciate the input and any further advice on how to improve my resume is greatly appreciated!

Your GPA is fantastic, but the SAT is weak, I would say a 2200 should be your target number. The ECs could use some work too, colleges love to see leadership and unfortunaley you have no leadership position in high school.

Your chance is relatively low, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you get in.

For your information, colleges don’t care about middle school ECs unless they are outstanding (i.e. creating a company/raising thousands of dollars for a charity). Being a captain of your 7th/8th grade basketball team and playing an instrument in middle school don’t belong on a college application.

You don’t have any real EC’s besides basketball, chess, and soccer. How good are those teams?
Your scores are low but your GPA is good. I don’t think you have a very good chance.
