I am currently a sophomore undergrad double majoring in biology and chemistry and minoring in healthcare admin. I really would like to go to Cornell for Vet School, but I'm facing a C in organic chemistry... Is it possible to get into Cornell with a C? Unfortunately, if I get a C, I can't retake the course because its a "passing" grade. Finals are next week so I will soon find out if I got a C or not. But I'm searching for advice on how to face this issue and whether or not my odds are decent for getting into Cornell. Thanks.

I can’t really answer your question about getting into Cornell, but since it’s the top vet school and admissions to any vet program are tough, a C may well be a problem. That being said, if the reason that you cannot retake it is due to financial aid, you should know that federal financial aid will generally allow one retake, even if the original grade is passing. State financial aid may differ, however. Also, as long as you take 12 financial-aid eligible credits, you can take as many other credits of “ineligible” courses as you want. If your school has some other policy about not retaking a course with a passing grade, you can always try to take it somewhere else, although you’d probably have to pay for the course.
Cornell’s admission formula places 50% weight on academics, 50% on other skills and achievements.
From their website:
25% Overall GPA
25% GRE (verbal and quantitative) or MCAT
5% Quality of Academic Program
20% Animal/Veterinary/Biomedical Experience
(supported with letters of evaluation)
10% Non-Cognitive Skills
10% All Other Achievements and Letters
of Evaluation
5% Personal Statement
If at all possible, retake organic - even if it’s at another school during the summer. That said, do make sure you’re meeting those other requirements. Good luck!
