Can I get into George Washington University early decision?

I am a current senior coming from a highly ranked high school on Long Island, that is very respected by colleges. I've actually moved 3 times within the tri-state area, so this is actually my third high school. Currently I have submitted my early decision application to GW and I also have had an interview at GW with a senior from admissions. I am nervous about my pending acceptance being that I just got back my SAT scores.

I have legacy at GW from my older brother, and my dad had a fellowship there (kinda like a post med school thing) so that also counts as legacy.

My personal statement and supplement essay are very respectable and should help in the process.

My gpa is a 3.34.

The only discrepancy that I have is over my test scores.

I have a 27 composite score on the ACT. to break it down it is: Eng: 24, Math: 27, Reading: 31 (I don't know how i pulled that off), Science: 26. I took the writing section, but the overall score i got was a 22 with a 6 on the essay...Is the essay/writing pertinent to GW? I have already submitted my ACT score.

I have taken the SAT 3 times, and my overall combined score is an 1860. However, that is the combined score of my last two tests.
Tests:
1: Cr: 490(I have no idea how this happened), Math: 660, Writing: 580 (essay:10) = 1730
2: Cr: 590(definitely an improvement), Math: 610, Writing:610 (essay:9) = 1810

So, Ive obviously done better on the SAT essay, but from what I've researched, both scores about middle 50% in GW's range, so it shouldn't make a difference if I send the SAT or not. I just dont want GW to see that 490 on critical reading, because that is horrible.

I interviewed with a senior while visiting my brother, and the interview went fine. I plan on sending the guy a thank you note today.

So does anyone have any insight on the possibility of me getting in?

Remember:
- Very good/respected high school
- Double legacy
- A little below avg GPA
- Avg test scores
- good college essays
- and I have made connections with many of admissions officers, such as Antoine Hart, Dorie Ain, and Dan Miller.

What do you think?

I also have great extra curriculars… such as founding a charity in my hometown, playing varsity sports…my current senior classes are:
AP Physics
AP Literature
AP Economics
AP Calculus

yea you have a solid shot, and early decision helps

my friend got into GW with a 1750 SAT and his app was similar to yours and he didnt have legacy

good luck

Thanks. That boosts my confidence!

anyone else have any thoughts?

isnt the average gpa like 3.8?

more like 3.5-3.6, but they dont really care about gpa too much because everyone comes from a different environment.

any other thoughts?

Well, I think you have a good shot- the legacy definitely helps, and if you do early decision I think you’ll be a shoo-in. My friend got in with a similar gpa and test scores, but no legacy, so you should be good to go.

thanks so much. I hear back in a month from today

Today, i read an article discussing an increase in the number of applications for early decision at GW. Apparently the number of applicants has risen by 1600 people. With my stats in mind, and the average stats of a person getting into GW, do you think this will hurt my chances?

No. Really, the legacy will help a ton and you are within the acceptance stats of years past. I wouldn’t freak out about it.

okay, thank you! One reason that I worry is because I am trying to figure out if I should do some other apps, just encase I don’t get in. I have all of them set up on common app, but i really don’t want to do them, especially if i don’t have to. A bunch of them don’t require essays, or their essays are pretty repetitive…so I’m thinking that I’ll do them after I hear back from GW, if necessary…

wow! I am in the exact same situation as you… My dad attended GWU, and my sister is currently attending. I also read that article about the increased number of early decision applicants this year and was freaking out a little bit. Last year I heard that they accepted too many students, and the fact that this year they got a record amount of applications, it makes me think they are going to be a little harder on admissions. I too was wondering if I should hand in other applications just in case, and I think I will. Im going to apply to two other schools who both have rolling admissions. I think you should too. If we dont get accepted into GWU, it only gives us like 2 weeks to hand in the other applications and I know the earlier you get the applications in… the better. Plus, im going to be freaking out all winter vacation if I learn that GWU did not accept me. you have to make sure you have a back up school just in case, and if you did the common app, it shouldn’t be that hard to apply to other schools.
-good luck!!

oh, and does anyone know if you have to send in your first marking period grades if you applied early decision

its all up to GW. what my guidance counselor told me is that they may be too swamped, so they might not ask for them, but its also possible that they will. So don’t get below a B- in anything. Also, how many kids from your school are applying early decision? Im ranked #2 out of the four people from my school that are.

Also, since you say that ur in the same situation as me, do you mean all the switching schools and test scores/gpa. or just that we both have double legacy?

well, i have a 3.8 gpa, but that is weighted, i dont know what it would be unweighted, but im sure its close to your gpa. I did do better on my SAT though, after adding up all of my best scores i got a 1960, i did not even take the act. I also think that I am the only one applying from my school early decision, so hopefully that will help me a little bit.

ya u shouldn’t worry

I think i should be finding out within a week or so. Damn, this is nerve racking!
