That is mostly it plus my mom's friend is on the board of Georgetown school of Foreign affairs so he will put in a good word for me at Georgetown College?

Here’s what would make a difference: if that person knows you well and has supervised your work, so that he can talk about your intelligence, your initiative, your adaptability, etc.

Colleges and universities care what you can do, and they appreciate references from people who can talk in detail about what you can do. They don’t care whom you know. They care even less whom your mom knows…and not at all about who is your mom’s boss’s brother.

That’s not the same as what I said. You may be a wonderful person, but Georgetown isn’t looking to admit wonderful people. Georgetown is looking to admit top students who not only have great potential but who also actually deliver. If this person can say from his own experience that you’re that kind of person, great! If, on the other hand, all this person can say is, “I really like america1776, and I think he (or she) would make a great Hoya,” then it’s a waste of both his time and the time of the admissions officer who’s going to read it.
