You sound like an impressive candidate and I think you have a good chance-however, given the recent hit to the endowment at Grinnell and elsewhere, you will need to apply to a number of schools to make sure you get accepted somewhere. Good luck!

it is said that Grinnell gave very limit money to internationals. if we apply FA, it will big hurt our chances
I am not sure it is true or not?
anyone can answer me?

Thanks M’s mom! By the way, i am applying to 11 colleges…and, i have also applied to gettysburg as a safe landing (is it a safe landing?)…and one more thing, is my ACT score going to hurt me? i am an international, though…

You are right ChongShu, but when I did an extensive research about grinnell, i found grinnell has placed my country (NEPAL) in the list where Grinnell provides special scholarships…i still dont know…yeah, forgot to tell you guys…my mascot essay for grinnell has been the best of all the essays that I have written…by the way, where are you applying?

No school is a safety if you are an international applying for a lot of financial aid-especially after recent economic events. Gettysburg is a lot safer than Grinnell, but no guarantees. And yes, your combined ACT is low for an applicant who wants a lot of money. However the criteria for judging international students may be different than for domestic applicants-I wouldn’t know. Have a Plan B.

Well good lucky for you, lazyboy. I am also a international student from China and was admitted by Grinnell in the early decision. I was awarded a 32800$ per year financial aid. Still, my family needs to pay a large amount of money for my tuition.

Grinnell has admitted at least 7 Chinese students in the early decision. To tell the truth, RD is a lot harder than ED.

but…since Grinnell offer special scholarship to Nepal…you still have a good chance.

BTW, where are you from, ChongShu? Sounds like an Asian name.

I guess ChongShu is from China! at least, the name is Chinese…hehe…right ChongShu?
If you send your scores, they will be interseted to see, but i guess, writing scores dont hurt much…considering that you are an international, they will not expect you to have your writing as a native speaker! anyways, where else are you applying? good luck dude!

congratulations kevintoy! by the way, what are you planning to study? and, can you please post your stats here? I would get a good hint of where I stand…and, how much did you assure to pay to grinnell at first? i hope my financial need is not going to hurt me much!

ah…I intend to study biochem and psycho…My stats?

Toefl 104
SAT 1 CR 670 math 800 writing700
SAT 2 math 800 physics 770 chemistry750

As for other materials, I do not think it’s a good idea to compare. I live in a very small town in China so I don’t have so many chances to take part in activities. I am rather poor in my ECs, really.

In China, financial need really matters. Grinnell is generous to international student; even so, the competitions are rigorous. I have to say it’s my unusual personality that makes the admission officers pick me.

Again, good luck.

Oh, and the money thing. At first my family contribution is about 11000$ per year.

your stats are pretty good as an international…congrats once again dude!

and, yes, how were your essays? especially the mascot essay? i guess that essay makes a huge difference because it is related to grinnell very closely! I hope I can meet you in Grinnell…(grinnell is my first choice, actually!)

Yeah ChongShu, I use the same name everywhere…
And…you were admitted by Grinnell? Why not contact me? Several of 2014er are going to Beijing to study the AP course… What about you?

And lazyboy, it’s unnecessary to worry…Just do your work and enjoy your life now.

I do not believe the mascot essay is that important. The admission officer want to know your unique opinion so as long as you can give a reasonable one and explain why you choose the mascot…That’s good enough.

As for your other choices, I would say in China, it is extremely difficult to get an offer from Caltech, dartmouth, Duke or Williams. I don’t know the situation of your country so I cannot chance you…sorry.

And…you should have finished all your application, right? Do not worry anymore, dude. you will get offers.

congratulation guys. at least you guys have a reasonably good academic performance, and a chance applying for early decision.

Grinnell is my dream school but for me, i just need to try and wait for the rejection offer. last time i check, there’re only 5 students accepted from 60 candidates for transfering students. No matter what, i tried, the past cannot be changed. i have to admit that, at least you guys know how to prepare for the admission tests, for me, my city, no one even knows what SAT or ACT is. anyway, i am really jeslous of you guys at least you have the possibility of being accepted.

best wishes to whom apply Grinnell College.

hey cby1990! infact, i also didn’t know how to prepare for the college admissions until a year back…and, you must be assured that even if you cannot give the tests, you can let the admission committee know about it! and, it is not only the academics that affect your chance for admission (i admit that it is the major factor)…but if you can share your unique personality then the committee may consider your chances! good luck buddy…
