I got a 224 PSAT and am expecting Nation Merit Finalist if not Scholar. 2150 SAT, really bad day, thought I was taking it a month later, no studying whatsoever. I am on the Varsity soccer team at my 2000+ division 5A high school, take all IB classes. I build my own guitars and amps, have had life-changing trauma(not going in to detail) but it didn't affect me academically. I am half Iranian living in a single parent(teacher) household. Also, I am expecting to get Eagle Scout and am told I have great character. BAD: I have around a 4.3 (weighted, obviously) GPA, mainly b/c of all of my hobbies.

What chances do I have of getting in to Harvard or equally selective school?
If it's not good, what schools should I look at?

Thanks so much for any info, it will be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I re-read that and it sounds kind of snooty, I REALLY did not mean for it to sound like that, I was just listing the things I think a good school might be interested in.

What's your UW? Sadly enough... GPA comes down to how many non-A's you have on your transcript for schools like Harvard. Also considered will be your rank, and SAT retake score. Course difficulty is also considered.

Also, not to mention the things we can't measure such as essays, interview, and recommendations...

I'd say you're a strong applicant, but nobody can guarantee anything. Harvard has a 8 percent admit rate. I'm sure you'll get into a fine school.

Thanks so much. This really puts my mind at ease. As far as chancing you...I'm not sure what that is, but if it is giving my opinion, I have no idea what schools are looking for. Apparently I'm not "in the loop". I can give it my best shot if you want, though.

a 2150 is not going to cut it for Harvard, but if you can bring it up you'll stand a decent chance.

But don't get too obsessed about Harvard!

My daughter is at Harvard this year as a freshman and after meeting all of her friends there, I think you sound very similar to a Harvard student. You have a strong resume.
If you have all your SAT scores in the 700’s and a 4.3 GPA out of 4.0, you definitely have a good chance.
They look for the best and unique in every area of life, sports, music, etc.
Your life altering trauma and the building of guitars and amps sounds very interesting.
Make sure you try and make your application unique and unforgettable.
They look for passion, leadership and excellence. If you have a passion for guitars, try and devote your time and efforts to that.
If you think you might be good enough to play DI soccer, contact the soccer coach!
Good luck - you sound like a very strong applicant who will do well.

Someone said Harvard’s acceptance rate was 8%, actually, for the class of 2015 it was around 6%.

To be accepted into Harvard, you have to be extraordinary. There are students who have the best resume’s and statistics in the world who get rejected from Harvard every year. To actually be admitted to Harvard takes a lot of luck. But remember, that luck will come with hard work!

My little brother claims he is going to Harvard as well. Have faith!
