Hello, Im new to the forums. Let me tell you something about myself.

Im a sophomore in high school. Currently Im ranked first in my class with a 4.0 un- weighted and 4.7 weighted. Im taking the most difficult courses at my school. I have been on the varsity tennis team since freshmen year. I have been awarded 3 Character awards and Im now on a committee for character education. I am also on my school Mock trial team, which I lead to state finals, where I won the Best Attorney award. Im also a apart of DECA where I won 4th place in my district over all. I have also been awarded the Whos Who of American high school students award, and Nation Honor Roll award. I took the PSAT and received an 1850. Im planning on taking about 10 AP courses and going to my local University to take high level math. It has been my lifes dream to get into Harvard and I was interested to see if I have a chance. Tell me if there is anything else that I need to do in order to improve my chances. Thanks.

Get at LEAST 2200 on the SAT. I'm pretty sure those to the lower end of Harvard's 25% have major hooks, but there's nothing especially conspicuous about your profile.

Don't mention these. They're scams.

Make sure all of your academic stats are excellent, but remember to find a passion and pursue it. Also, don't become overly absorbed in CC; you're only a sophomore.

Yeah Im trying to think of something to do to stand out, I can't really think of something. I was thinking of starting some sort of organization to help people out.

Do you think Harvard would accept you if your really good at school and very involved? Or do they only take you if you did something amazing?

If someone here got into Harvard can you tell me some of the stuff you did so I can't try to model you and see if I got what it takes? Thanks

Being really good at school and getting really involved is not a major hook unfortunately... it would be better if it were a more major (or at least more unusual) thing.

I don't really think you can model yourself after someone elses hook as it really only works if you are truly passionate about it.

CC is college confidential, the website we're on.

CC is just college confidential. Colleges are looking for stories, and Harvard is no exception. I've seen someone get into harvard with a high GPA and mid 1200's/1600 on the SAT. She did nothing out of the ordinary, except for being very involved in activities at school, but she did have a story to tell. So I guess you either need some great hook or a story.

What was her story? Are you sure she wasn't at least a legacy or something (maybe she wrote like the best essay ever?) ? I've never heard of a case like that.

Well this might be common, but I'm going to try to model my personal essay from my parents struggle to come to America. They had to escape from communism. That is the real reason why I try to so hard; I believe with all my heart that they came here so I could make something of myself. Hopefully that will grab the attention of Harvard.

Alpha143, I applaud you for being so conscientious so early, but be wary of yourself. You as a sophomore will be so different from you as a senior, it's ridiculous. Do what you really want to, and you'll find a way to make yourself stand out. Your plans for the essay will most definitely change a couple times before you actually sit down to write it a year from now. Re: the subject you have currently chosen, I think it's great that you appreciate everything your parents did for you, but your ambition isn't really to become any old 'something,' is it? The drive to succeed can factor in, but I would focus more on the passion for academia for its own unique sake. IMO, it's more about learning than attention-grabbing.

my essay touches the same subject except that i had to live under communism too not just my parents and i left alone.
i will let you know if they liked it :P
good luck!

According to your introduction of yourself, you definitely have a chance of getting in!! And REALLY don't worry too much about the SAT score, or at least don't worry about it if English is not your first language. Because I only got a 690 on verbal and 670 (I think) on writing, and I still got in...
I still don't know why I got in. But I'm quite excited
It is really very much about luck, and where God thinks is the best place for you. So, Good Luck!
