Can I get in???? Advice please, thanks a lot

ok. sats 2300, lots of piano awards, mostly from competitions in the city and some provincial/national competitions, Royal Conservatory graduate, soloist for international concerts, student council executive member, executive member of school charity organization as well. lots of volunteer work and everything associated with that. taking all the hardest courses at school, but my school is an art school and doesnt offer AP, IB or gifted. doing night school as well. Average of 97. Any advice? Can I make the fact that I go to an art school a selling point? By the way, do ivies like lots of essays and recommendation letters from an applicant? Also, i don't want to disclose my ethnicity on the application, but I mean they'll know by the last name and the picture, right? Are there any ways I can not let them know my race?I'm going for all the Ivies except columbia and princeton. And no, i don't want to get into pre-med, math/engineering, or science like the stereotypical Asian. Will this increase my chances? Thanks a lot

I'm international, top 2% of class.
third place in provincial piano comp.
french club
debate club,
not a lot of sports stuff tho
i'm not doing early decision, btw is it really that important?
I dont want to make my race such a huge deal because its not to me at least, but how will that affect my chances?

P.S what are your reasons irap3pillows? Anything is welcome

"you sound like a big college tool to me", rhinoplasty? it's good to know there are still some lovely, lovely people out there...

to answer the question: i think we would definitley need more specific information if you wnat really helpful feedback. gpa? sat breakdown? still, i am impressed by your various musical achievements, and if you can prove that your academic merit is equally impressive, i think you have a chance. as for race, i think that while they will certainly note it from your last name and picture, you will be sending a message by not checking the box on your application.

I'm not sure where irap3pillows, cheesemaster, and rhinoplasty (odd names!) are coming from. As a domestic applicant you'd definitely have a fighting chance. Applying as an international complicates matters.

Reconsider your list. Only Harvard and Yale are need-blind for internationals on your list, so it might be a good idea to add Princeton (especially since it doesn't include loans in FA). Williams and Middlebury would be worth considering as well. Slightly less selective schools like Rice, Oberlin, or Northwestern should also be considered. Your race will not help your application, but it is unlikely it will significantly hurt it.

If you're as good as your post implies, definitely include an arts supplement.

Think carefully before you apply to nearly all the Ivies. You are, academically, just an average applicant at Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth, and slightly above average at Brown and Penn. Only at Cornell are your stats well above average. Essentially, this means you have about a 10% chance at Harvard and Yale, around a 15% chance at Brown and Dartmouth, a 20% chance at Penn, and maybe a 35% chance at Cornell. I suggest that you, at the very least, add a few good, but somewhat less selective schools to your list to improve your chances of getting into a school somewhere. Putting all your eggs into the Ivy League basket, especially considering how competitive and selective they are, is not a wise move.

will applying for financial aid hurt my chances significantly? Also, I believe that an average of 97 in Canada is the equivalent of 4.0 in the States? i am also organizing a benefit concert this Fall to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society.
I've heard that I'm competing with other Asian, international students, so I just have to make sure that I'm top in that pool of candidates? Can anyone comment on the art school factor thing?

P.S cheesemaster, please elaborate, what is wrong with my extra-curriculers?

Art school probably a net plus and not sure how you could not emphasize it anyways, as I might presume you are not giving up peformance , and forget about hiding ethnicity - it won't work anyways, with schools like Yale - no one could tell you the odds - that would be impossible

Best advice I can give you is this, and I am no expert -but I do know a few things

Make a digital recording - reasonably good quality to put onto a CD about 10 minutes (in most cases), several types of music - showing range and etc, several pieces of music you do - just yourself solo. Submit them to some of the schools with their Art Supplement paperwork

Make sure the IVYs you're applying have your SAT score results

you will eventually need probably 3 SAT II's for most of these schools - you should take soon if you have not taken them

get some paperwork over to them -transcripts, online applications etc - the earlier the better - you want these schools to have the info

You want certain decision makers at the school (in your case in the arts) to start thinking about you as a possible for admission - now obviously these top schools have 1000's of highly qualified people - however you are somewhat unique (given the SATs and performance combined) enough - that they will at least take some notice

My guess is in your case the music experts when they get your samples - will be asking over to admisssions about what your raw stats are - SATs. class rank - the hard numbers - so you want those things submitted regardless of when all your data goes in.

Yale I believe has about 100 intl students year and about 3/4th apply for aid and most get it -some others in here might know better about that
