I have a combined biology lecture and lab grade and our lab teacher is horrendous. I get A's on every lecture test but think my lab portion is going to bring my grade down to a B. Should I just give up on getting into med school now? I feel like this one bad teacher is ruining my chances, and I will have her next semester again since she is the only biology lab teacher for intro to bio 2. thanks guys :)

lol? are you serious? everyone gets B's (they're not that bad). The average gpa is usually around 3.6. So NO, getting one B will not hurt you and you should still work hard in your other classes because you are far from out of the running for med school.

Is a B in a science course (premed req) not worth retaking? I mean, I realize that it's not necessary by any means, but if your schedule allows it - is it a good idea? Would med schools rather see a B in a course, or an A that was only earned the second time around? At my school, if you retake a course, the first grade doesnt show up on the transcript and is not factored into the GPA - but the class itself shows up twice.

dear god. please make it stop

To add something constructive: you will be required to report both grades despite how your school calculates your GPA. AMCAS will average the two grades together. And it is not a good idea to retake a B. I'm VERY surprised your college even allows that.

IMO, retaking classes (unless the initial grade is really bad) is a waste of time. Don't dwell on past mistakes. Do really well in your current classes and that will show improvement.

The ONLY way it would be advisable to retake a course - under any circumstances, no matter what your initial grade was - is if your undergraduate school will ERASE the initial grade from your transcript upon retake. Period.

I have yet to find a school that does this, although I suspect some of them exist.

sorry guys!!

i realized how stupid this post sounds now..

i just took an awful bio exam when i posted this so i got to the whole my life is over line of thinking going when i get mad about things.

its good to know that B's are ok thanks for the input as always!

If there is a school that will let you retake a B, I'd like to see it. Usually you have to score below what would be considered "passing" in a class taken pass/no pass...so like at least a C- or lower.

lol at NCG...I was thinking the same thing.

Trust me when I say this, most people, no matter how smart you are or how much you study, will end up getting a grade of B or even lower in some pre-med prereqs. At least one for most people I would say. Its just the way it is, don't panic about it. You'll be fine, your in the same boat as many others.

no. cut your losses.
