Ok im an international student, want to apply for mechanical engineering and ive translated my grades and stuff to make it easy for the USA people to make sense of it so here goes,

I (apparently) have a GPA of 4.85 with maths physics chemistry and economics as subjects at AS level (you cannot take more than 4 and have to drop one for year 13) and in year 13 i am taking physics chemistry maths and AS further maths.

I have a SAT score of 2200

Over all that i have worked with a research facility for 6 months and made a report, did a university headstart engineering course, 2 weeks of work experience, read around the subject of engineering and am building a go kart with a group friends who also want to do mechanical engineering.

I am taking part in an international public speaking competition, am a house prefect, worked at a charity organization, do D of E gold (where you have to be out in the wild for 5 days, plan your route and climb mountains and stuff ( i had to climb britain's 2nd highest mountain on the third day) there is no assistance and you are in a group of 5 and have to provide for yourself.), did young enterprise (where you start a company, come up with a product and sell it). etc.

Sorry this is SOOOO long but any help would be really appreciated :)
Thanks a lot.

Hmmm the admissions process is so random there’s not much of a point in chancing people for schools like MIT, but I’d say you’re a serious candidate and you should definitely apply.
I know this isn’t very helpful, but for schools like MIT you just never know.

Chance thread are seriously stupid mate if guys say you have a shot you ll be excited and not believe in me,but if they say you dont have any chance then you ll agree with me

You are in the possible range. The only ones who can give you a realistic assessment of your chances are the members of the admissions committee at MIT, and then only when they have your complete application package in front of them.

Here’s the official word from a member of that committee:

Make sure your college list includes some safeties - schools where your stats are well above the norm, that you can pay for under most pessimistic FA assumptions, and where you’d be happy.

hey thanks a lot annasdad :).
I was a bit close-minded when it came to where to apply and where i want to go but that link really broadened my perspective a LOT.

I wouldn’t say getting admitted to MIT is “random” as other posters have said but you never know exactly what they’re looking for. Your stats look like you are
“in the running” meaning it is worth your $$ to apply! Only they will be able to tell you if you have what they are looking for. IMO it’s worth applying. Good luck!
