Can I Get Into Northeastern University, Boston University, Boston College, or NYU?

I’m starting senior year of high school this August and I am wondering about my chances of getting into any of the schools mentioned (especially Northeastern).

I’m not sure if this helps, but I go to a small private school in the Midwest, I’m female, and I am biracial.

My ACT is a 31. I am planning on taking it one more time; if I raise any of the sections by 1 point (hopefully math), I’ll be able to superscore for a 32.

My GPA at the end of junior year is a 3.73. There is a somewhat upward trend in my GPA: freshman year I got a 3.55 both semester, sophmore year I got a 3.49 both semesters, and junior year I got a 4.20 both semesters.

I’ve taken AP Biology and AP US History and I am planning on taking Calculus AB and AP Portfolio. (Side note: my school doesn’t offer anything other than normal classes and AP classses, such as Honors.)

I’ve been an equestrian all throughout high school and have competed with success. I’ve volunteered junior year (and will continue senior year) at the state hospital in the Pediatric Center and Radiation Oncology. I also oil paint in my free time a lot.

I’ve done other, more fleeting extracurriculars, too. I was in choir in 9th grade and will be doing it again in 12th grade. I played varsity basketball freshman year (but I do go to a small school). I’m on National Honor Society (11, 12) and we volunteer twice a semester. When I took Spanish, I medaled on the National Spanish Exam (9, 10). I will be on the math team (12).

Let me know what you think! Thank you!

Your unweighted GPA tells us more than your weighted GPA. If your GPA is a 3.73 weighted, that can be a very different situation than a 3.73 unweighted, depending on the school’s weighting system.

BU is a match. Northeastern, BC and NYU would be high match/low reach. Essays, EC’s and showing interest may help. NYU Stern would be a reach.

I think it is unweighted but I am not 100% sure. It is a 3.73 on a 4.0 scale.

Thanks! I’m visiting Northeastern, BC, and BU in the next week. I do think writing is one of my strong suits so I think my common app plus other school required essays will round me out more. Any other suggestions?

If you obtained the GPA of 3.73 by averaging the GPAs of all three years, then I think it’s a weighted GPA because your junior GPA is above a 4 which means that it is weighted. In this case, all four colleges will be reaches for you. I would talk to your counselor to confirm whether it is weighted or unweighted.

A student could also have a GPA above 4.0 if A+ = 4.3. Ask your counselor, but you can also check your School Profile, which is probably available online someplace.

I would say High Match /Low Reach for both, do you have any hooks?

“Small private school” can mean a lot here. Do almost all of your school’s graduates have a record of going to very competitive four year colleges? In some schools a GPA does not mean very much as the average class grade on a scale of 100 may be a 75 and most of the graduates still go on to very competitive colleges and will have strong success rates.

Your RIC and your your school profile can make all the difference here.

What areas do you think you want to study? What other schools are on your list? Why BC and Northeastern?
:bz

You will get into Northeastern but BC is going to need a higher ACT score to have a chance. Good luck!!

@Testingearly Mid 50% ACT scores at Northeastern are 31-34. At BC they are31-33. So the Op is at the 25rg percentile of enrolled students at both schools. Both are high matches.

Hi, I’m wondering if anyone can tell me if I have any chance at attending Northeastern or Boston College?

At the end of junior year I had a 3.73 UW GPA. There’s an upward trend in my GPA among the years, too. I took APUSH and AP Biology junior year and I’m taking AP portfokio and AP Calc AB senior year. I go to a small private school and we are only allowed to take a maximum of 8 AP courses throughout of the years and they don’t offer Honors/IB/etc (basically any classes other than regular and AP aren’t offered).

I got a 31 on my ACT which I’m going to take one more time. If I raise any one of my sections (which will definitely be math because I didn’t finish the whole thing when I took it this time), it will superscore to a 32.

I was in honor roll for all A’s and B’s freshman and junior year. I also got Mencion Honorifica for the National Spanish Exam (a national award) freshman and sophomore year. I’m also in NHS.

I was an competitive equestrian for freshman, sophomore, and junior year (I did it in middle school too, but don’t think that matters). I’ve won state and regional awards and spent about 10 hours a week out at the barn. I also like oil painting and have won a few awards for that. I was in choir in 9th grade and we got a Superior Rating at the District Music Contest. I’m also taking it senior year. I volunteer 2 hours a week, 36 weeks a year (during the school year) at the state hospital in Pediactrics where I help with the kids admitted there. In the summer, I’m volunteering at Radiation Oncology just because I wanted to try something else.

I think this is everything? Please let me know!
