I visited NYU the other day and fell in love with it. I would apply/major in film and television at the Tisch School of Arts. I have a 3.7 GPA and a 1670 for SAT. I know SAT is very low but on the tour they said GPA and scores for admittance vary from school to school. If I have a good portfolio would this be enough to get me in possibly?
AAAAARRRRGGGHH! I will scream if I see one more chance post for Tisch (or any other BFA program that bases admission primarily on auditions or portfolios). Your GPA is fine. Your test scores are probably on the low side, but they won’t disqualify you. Tisch Film School has one of the lowest acceptance rates of any college in the country - well below that of Harvard or Stanford. You will be competing with the most talented, accomplished young filmmakers in the country for just a handful of slots. If your submission is the best, your SAT will be overlooked. If it isn’t one of the best, a 2400 wouldn’t help you. Bear in mind that NYU is “test-flexible” (not to be confused with test-optional). I suggest you take the ACT and some subject tests, so that you can select the best scores to submit. Some BFA programs barely take academic qualifications into consideration at all. Tisch calls itself a “50/50” school, which officially means that they place equal weight on talent submissions and transcript/test results. Talent will always win, but they expect students to meet a certain threshold academically. Your grades are certainly above that; your test scores are not. How were your CR and Writing scores? I think that BFA programs are usually pretty forgiving for Math scores.
Both Critical reading and Writing scores are in the 600’s. Math scores are my worst. I am aware how competitive the school is I was just looking at it from an academic standpoint. Thank you for your response!
I would definitely go for another test (ACT or 3 subject tests). Tisch still wants the kids in their program to be very smart, and having an SAT math score in the mid 400’s will not impress. Try the ACT atleast to see if the SAT is just not your thing.
I definitely will, thanks again for your help!
