People on this site seem to be pretty realistic about admissions chances, so I figured I'd ask.

I'm applying to Rice under Early Decision this year.

Stats:

GPA: 3.7 (unweighted), 4.4 (weighted)

SAT: 730 W, 720 CR, 630 M
combined 1600: 1350, combined 2400: 2080

APs: 5 (US History), 5 (English Lang. & Comp.), 4 (Calc AB)
(Now taking AP Euro, AP Stats, AP Lit)

Great extracurriculars (leads in school musical, head of student government, senior mathematics thesis in progress)

My dad taught there for 15 years until 2000

My mom went there

do still you live in the Houston area? If so, your chances are skewed lower because there are so many applicants from the area.

does your school rank? If you aren’t in the top 5 percent and you are still in Houston, it’s going to be a long shot. Rice reaches much deeper into the classes of high schools that are not right in their backyard. But, for example at my high school I don’t think they’ve taken anyone below top 3 percent the past few years.

If your family has moved away after your dad stopped teaching at Rice, your chances are much better.

Yes, we’ve moved away and are now in Northern NJ. I am actually in the top 5% percent of my HS graduating class here, also. I know they’re very selective when it comes to applicants within the state, but we’ve been in NJ since 2010.

Yeah the 630 is my weak spot. My mathematics thesis is on game theory and incentives, so it is really grounded in economics. But I’m going into Pre-law with a Policy Studies major.

I’m staying overnight in October and interviewing on-campus. Also, I’m the only student on the local board of education.
