When you ask on this board, people will likely respond with “Don’t depend on chance threads; the only people who can chance you accurately are the admissions officers, so chance threads aren’t helpful.”

My response is just that.

You’ve already applied, and most members here will have a hard time evaluating your academics, so the only real point of this thread is to gain assurance.

My recomendation is just to not worry about whether you can get in and just wait for the decision.

The IPhO should get you in if nothing else.

Also I feel like the above two responses aren’t helpful in the least - he KNOWS we’re not the admissions office, but he’s asking for the opinion of students familiar with the university. I understand when people say things like “don’t worry wait and see” because they don’t want to say “no”, but this guy looks like he has a legit shot so I don’t think it’s warranted.

Because if you say no, the poster becomes sad
if you say yes, the poster becomes happy and when decision time comes (if he is rejected) hates his life even more.

Just wait and see, you cant do anything about it now. Good luck

I stopped taking chance threads seriously after that incident involving the legacy.

If you’ve seen Rice’s stats and you’ve compared your own to the stats of the general student body, then you have as good of an idea about your chances as the people that you’re asking. Therefore, I conclude that chance threads are pretty much a lost cause unless, as SaintSaens mentioned, it’s for reassurance. People ask to be chanced, take those responses and get their hopes up/down, only to find that the letter from the college says something different.

yes, chance threads are just the places to get our hopes up or down…and this is what i need… i need your honest comments, no matter how harsh they are! at least i will have an idea of where i stand until my decision comes…

and, ohsnapitskira! you are absolutely right from your point of view…but, there are some students who want to know their standings from others who know the colleges very well or from those who are already accepted…yes, these threads mean nothing…but, at least, they remind us our placeand we get to know the differences!

My honest thoughts:

I can’t evaluate your academics since I’m unfamiliar with Nepalese schooling, although your rank looks good.

Test scores: Your ACT may hurt you, but you SAT subject tests are good. Your TOEFL score (assuming its the web-based TOEFL) meets the mark.

EC’s: Looks good.

You appear to have the elements of an outstanding applicant, but you can never really tell what will happen with schools like Rice.

sigh Well, since I am on a chance thread, might as well.

I say you’re an overall qualified applicant. There may be a few shortcomings (I know I had my share on my application), but I don’t think it’s severe to the point that it would be the reason for your denial. I don’t think your ACT score will be the deciding factor because it’s not that far from the midde 50% range.

Yes, I took the iBT, SaintSaens! And, thank you for your views ohsnapitskira…
Guys, can you please tell me my standings in these colleges too…
-williams
-vassar
-grinnell
-oberlin
-gettysburg

please give you honest comments, no matter how harsh…
Thank you once again guys!
