Browndude 123,
you have significant achievement in your extra curriculars
and CollegeboadJaJa, show some politeness please. Based on what do you say its mediocre?are you a ■■■■■?
That you are leading position in your EC will be great for you.
Still, GPA may be the problem, and that you had 3 in AP physics may not look good to Stanford.
Give a shot.
For now, you have to write a GREAT ESSAY.
When you write an essay, talk about yourself, not wholly about events/people that influenced you. Such mistake is actually very very common, as Stanford alumnus I met told me.
Also, counsel with LEGITIMATE english teacher. Sometimes eng teacher can be a complete idiot like mine in Senior English, or have odd criteria. Ask several teachers and find ‘normal’ ones. Then, pick someone who’s greatly insightful if you can.
I wish you a great luck.
and it would be nice if you chance me

Your in congrats on all the accomplishments!

I’m not going to sugarcoat what is blatantly obvious. I’m not being rude; I’m just being realistic. If browndude123 wanted politeness, then he shouldn’t post his stats on a chance thread.

His/her EC’s are very generic. I’m just saying what is obvious. This isn’t ****ing UofM we’re talking about, it’s Stanford. There is no 1 EC that really makes the poster stand out. Many of Stanford applicants WILL have some form of lab work. Browndude123 hasn’t actually competed in USABO, USAMO, or any of these competitions, so they wouldn’t really count. He/she hasn’t actually been published yet. These are all SPECULATIONS. AP scholar awards do not really count. Regional medals and Tennis (sports) medals? Other applicants have those as well.

Maybe you should stop posting like a kiss ass and realize that most of Stanford applicants have ECs that make them stand out from the crowd.

I’m sorry browndude123 if I sound rude, but again, I’m just stating what is obvious. If you wanted sugarcoated responses (which I doubt you did), you shouldn’t have posted on CC. Anyways, best of luck, but don’t expect anything (not because of your stats, because it’s ****ing Stanford).

I definitely think you can get into U of M… Your ECs are extremely good. The GPA, eh, not so much. But I think the D’s will be overlooked by Michigan. I don’t think Stanford will forgive them though

Nebuchadnessar3: I still have to fill out the activities section of the Common App haha. I’m going to have to figure something out. Also, colleges will recognize the fact that there may be limited amount of opportunities in certain areas, especially India. I’m not sure how far legacy goes. I think it is only for immediate family.

billscho: I’ll definitely have to do that, but I’m still unsure about whether to apply EA or RD.

sweetcupcake12: I think michael543212345 was referring to me receiving admission at UofM. But I do agree. “Guaranteed” should never be used. Thanks though!

NTragakis: That’s what I was worried about. Thanks for the chance though!

paul2752: Thanks for the compliment! Yeah, the 3 in AP Physics B really screwed me over, which is why I’m dedicated to getting 5’s on both Physics Cs. I really hope I can write great essays. I just don’t know how to write them! Do I write a story? Answer the prompt directly? How?! I do have a lot of people in mind for review, but I first need to write my rough drafts. Thanks for the advice! I’ll def chance you. Also, can you chance me for UofM? How do I stand?

jake5504: I really hope so!

CollegeBoardJaJa: I don’t mind the bluntness of your replies, but be mindful of others please! I really tried my best to have some good ECs. I would say my best ECs are Debate, Tutoring, and Research. The reason I started research in a lab late is because I couldn’t find a Neuroscience lab that a) would accept me or b) actually did something that I’m interested in. I ended up having to find a lab at UofM. I commute 2 hours a day just so I can get lab experience and hopefully a paper. When it comes to USAMO/USABO/USAChO, the reason I’m starting those late is because my school only offered USAMO until I asked them to offer the other ones. I feel as though I’ve reached the highest level that I could in my ECs and I will try my best to express that to my colleges. Thanks for your opinions!

meleniad9: Thank you! I very much needed that! But Stanford…

I would say you’re a match. Research at the school you want to go to will really help. I think you have a great application, but your GPA may hinder you a bit. Good luck! I hope you get in!

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1561842-chance-me-duke-ed-will-chance-back-within-24-hours.html#post16449634

@CollegeBoardJaJa
-show some respect to others Please.
Sugarcoating won’t work I know, but maybe I should have mentioned that
ECs aren’t all he’s gonna submit. If those were all he could do, then what could he do?
And I am not trying to sound like a kickass. I write what I know(well, except about chances), not what sounds like a kickass.

TBH, Browndude, I do think your ECs are great, but maybe I should have added that they are not outstanding enough to separate you from others (for Stanford, at least). Thats what CBJ must have meant. And It seems like you are not in location where the resources are limited.

I think for now, you need to write a stellar essay. That’s the only thing you have the absolute control, right?

Just FYI, it’s a great idea to find a current student of Stanford for help.

Thank you for the information. That makes sense.

picklechicken37: Thanks for the chance!

paul2752: Thanks for the advice! I’m definitely going to take all of that into consideration. All I have now are my essays.

Necuchadnezzar3: No problem!

billscho: Should one also submit an abstract somewhere of what the research is about?

^rowerruns. you can explain it in Additional Info in CA. It doesn’t hurt at least.

paul2752: thank you so much for your help.

@sweetcupcake12

I was referring to Michigan. Perhaps you haven’t been long on this site to know how titles can change? Perhaps you also haven’t been in school long enough to read either before you speak your mouth. Perhaps you should finish English 10 and be on this site for more than 6 months before you act like you know what you’re talking about. Harsh, but true.

In addition, if you think getting research experience at a professional laboratory (not a joke laboratory run on a mcdonalds buget), then you’re extremely uninformed about how much research is valued especially if there is a publication to go with it.

Thank you everyone for your chances! I’ll def heed your advice.

Also, for any future chances, can you chance me for just University of Michigan? Thanks.

The adcom people would not understand your abstract more than the title. Just put it as an citation is enough. What they care is where did you send it to. That shows the value of it.
