Recommendations:
Should be decent, I got one from my research mentor

Thanks.

you should be fine; but write great essays because your stats are like everyone elses

probably one of the best ones on cc i’ve seen

haha
a USAMO and USNCO qualifier with almost 4.0/2400/all 800s not only thinks that he is a “stupid kid” but also wonders if he he has any hope of getting into Stanford…

don’t let those jealous buffoons who claim that all asians who do math and orchestra are equivalent and have slim chances get to you
if theres no hope for you theres no hope for anyone.

You’re in.

get a 2400, damit

why are u even asking? what more could u really do to make ur stats look any better? just realize that schools like stanford are prob not going to accept a student because they have perfect stats. they look for distinguishing qualities. I think being a siemens semi/regional finalist is pretty special as well as usnco and usamo. But then again the admissions process is unpredictable.

How important are essays to Stanford? I don’t think I’m a very good essay writer.

I don’t think there’s one answer to this. What adcoms generally say when they write books is that essays can torpedo you if clueless but in general only make a difference in ‘close cases’. However, you should certainly work at doing the best effort you can. It’s a well-documented genre, so there’s plenty of advice available on what works and what to avoid.

maybe you should show evidence of leadership, but very, very nice numbers. your school sounds pretty competitive.

No, my school is dumb. I’m the third USAMO qualifier in school history and they did nothing when I won regional finals for siemens. Yet they recognize all these national merit semis at a convo…

Is president of math club, captain of academic club, captain of ARML gold team (forgot to list), webmaster for school website (forgot to list) not enough leadership?

oh, okay, that’s really good leadership. Haha. You have the same stats of this girl from my school who got into Stanford a few years ago. She ended up going to MIT though. but I think you have a great chance.

Just a query. Where is one supposed to mention ‘math research’ on the Stanford supplement?

Hellfire, the best place for that is in the common app itself, in the Additional Info section. The supplement also has an additional info section, but they have strict rules about the small set of things they allow there, so use the common app section

chance = ~80%. though does depend on what state you’re applying from.

Why does the state matter? I’m not in California.

Typically Stanford admits more Cali kids…I think about 40% of their class is Californian

the %age has been going down, as Stanford has become better known back east. I don’t know what it is right now, but I don’t think they favor CA kids - I think that’s just reflective of the app pool. Same thing for Harvard, for instance - half their class is generally from the NE.

I think the merit semis are important to the headmasters because the
school is rated somewhere by someone probably based on this plus it
highlights their efforts at school (somewhat) compared to Siemens
(where we had to work individually).
