I really really want to go to Stony Brook next year to major in journalism. The only problem is that my criteria isn't exactly what they are looking for. My GPA, UNWEIGHTED, is an 81. I've taken honors English and global studies since I was in 9th grade, and I took AP US History and now I am in college English. Most of my grades fall into the 80s-95 range, actually only about 3 or 4 grades I have gotten since 9th grade have been below an 80. I don't know my weighted GPA yet. I got a 23 on my ACT, with a 30 in reading and a 29 in writing. I come from a SUPER small school and am 19th in a class of 42, but at my school class rank doesn't really matter. I am super involved with my school, I am the secretary of the yearbook club, as well as an editor. I played varsity soccer, basketball and softball and I am on the homecoming and prom committee, as well as student council. I do lots of volunteer work, from the SPCA to community cleanup. Over the years, my teachers have constantly praised my writing, and I have even been published in the local newspaper and a poetry book and read an essay i wrote to my town and our congressman. I hope that my high ACT writing and reading skills, as well as my essay, will prove to the college that I excel in writing and will excel in the journalism major, despite my academic record. The only reason my GPA isn't where it should be is because I am horrible at math.

Try UMO instead; there your rank will actually save you.

If you can get your test scores up it’ll be an easier school to get into.
