Can I get into the University of Michigan?

Ok, I'm a junior in high school and I'm striving to go to U of M. Do you think I will be able to get in with this application?

I attend Great Oak High School in Southern California. I am currently in the full IB program. My unweighted GPA is around a 3.9. I'm taking very rigorous classes included the hardest math class offered at my school my senior year (HL Mathmatics). I passed AP calculus BC this year with and A both semesters.

My ACT score is a little low. I got a 25 on my first try, however I'm studying hard to try and raise it. I got a 28 in math, 28 in science, 24 in writing, and a 21 in reading....

I have many EC's including many clubs. I have also been playing soccer my entire life and I played on the varsity level as a sophomore. I am also in the program, Amigos de las Americas, were I will be going to a Latin American county for 7 weeks over summer. I will be staying with a host family in an underdeveloped community. I will be leading a community project in my Latin American community. I have spent over 120 hours of traing for this program. I think you get what I'm doing so I won't get into full details about this program.

My teachers and counselor love me and will write me awesome letters of recommendation (one teacher is actually a U of M alumni).

I will also be able to write a great personal essay.

Also, both my dad and my dads dad went to the University of Michigan. I'm not sure how much legacies help but I'm curious to know.

Lastly, I'm playing on going into the college of engineering. I am very strong in math and science.

What do the think my chances are of getting admitted? Thank you so much for your time!

I am surprised to see your Math score at 28 while you are taking very advanced math and claimed to be strong in math. The mid 50% of ACT for UMich 2012 was 29-33 with an average of 31. CoE would have even higher stat with particular focus on math score too. So you would have to work very hard to bring up your ACT scores. Your GPA and course load are fine. You may also want to take Math2 and a science subject test to strengthen your application although they are not required for UMich. With your current score, UMich would be a reach for you.

I know, for some reason I’m not a good test taker when it comes to the ACT! I’ll keep studying because I really want to get into Michigan! Thank you

Have you tried the SAT?

Interesting how every sentence in your first post starts with “I” or “my”…

^ You are not grading his post as an essay, are you? LOL.

Just interesting…haha

Ya I tried the SAT and it didn’t got to well either…I got a 1740. 660 in math, 540 in reading, and 530 in writing. I don’t know what it is about those tests… I think I will be able to improve my ACT score, I just need to keep practicing…

int v1 = (You apply to Michigan through EA instead or RD) ? 0 : -2.25;
int v2 = [(Your best ACT score at time of application) - 30]/3;

your chance of getting admitted to Michigan (out of 10) = 7.25 + v1 + v2;
/* NOTE: 10 = complete safety, 1 = no chance whatsoever

If you get your ACT to 29 or higher, you’ll probably get in (as the above formula stipulates). Good luck! */

^ ACT 29 is only at 25% of admission stat last year.

Do you guys think being a legacy increases my chance of getting in?

It helps a little bit, but probably as much as being URM or in state.

UMI: Reach

What if I get my ACT score up?

If you get 31+, you will be a match.

Yes, but the OP is a legacy with excellent grades who’s getting a rec from another alum. His chances are pretty good for UMich with a 29 on the ACT imo.

If he got 29 in ACT, it will still be a high match to low reach particularly for oos.

A 28 Math ACT is a huge hurdle to overcome for Michigan Engineering.

Good point. I guess my chancing would be more accurate if you subtracted 0.75 from it.

With a 25 on your ACT and a 3.9 you will not get in, I had a friend that applied to U of M with a 29, 3.9, multiple AP classes, and her extracurriculars were similar to yours except she was the president or other officer of just about every club she was in along with being a gifted writer with great recommendations. She was wait-listed from early action and then denied for regular decision. I believe a 31 on her ACT would have elevated her enough to be accepted and I think that would be enough for you too. So in essence study for the ACT and do well, then you will be accepted for sure.
